Deker 3,478
Ok the story is Canada Goose in the 100-150 yard area. So forget shotgun here... Your choice of rifle calibre and bullet type and reasons please.....not interested in the food side, they just need to drop when hit... Cheers Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Rimmies are no good for such large beasts, so I'd be looking at a Hornet if I reloaded. If not a .223. Reasons being that the Hornet is more than capable yet not massively overpowered and with reloading is a very accurate tool. The .223 is a versatile round with a very large selection of ammunition available. Quote Link to post
november 2
I must admit, that the only goose I ever shot was with a .308 170grain GECO softpoint .. entrywound was 1cm, exit was about 3cm in diameter. worked just fine. so go, get a 308 Quote Link to post
HUnter_zero 58
rifle calibre and bullet type and reasons If I were to use a rifle, then I'd go for something fast, hard hitting with rapid expansion. .22-250 with V-max 60 grainers would do the trick. Why, near .243" ballistics with out the hassle of getting the land passed, V-max due to the likelihood of little or no backstops presuming the birds are landing on stubble or open grass land, combined with rapid expantion which will hit the birds for six. At a push, I'd go for a .223 with V-max as a far second for the same reasons. John Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
I've shot Canadas with rifles from 17HMR to 243. As has been said HMR isn't up to it, but you know my thoughts on that one Hornet works, but isn't as instant as a 243 or 223. Given that I know the land, 243 with a softpoint isn't going to be particularly safe, so my recommendation would be 223 with a v-max tip of the 40 or 50 grain variety. Suitably large hole, very forgiving, breaks up easily so nice and safe. Quote Link to post
