100 bunnies singled handed

Recommended Posts

i no a old boy he dont really run dogs now but he has told me back in the late 70's early 80's that there was loads of rabbits. the fields looked liked they was moving is how he put it. he nver said bout the 100 but he has told me of high 80's which i still think is some acheivment. i do think the 100 could be done though if you had the right dog and land and that many rabbits. you would be lucky to see 100 rabbits in a season no matter about catching that many

:icon_eek:toughguy i do recall one lad telling me of that area you mentioned, and it was littered with rabbits, but either way you must of had a very good dog to pull that many, what way was she bred, was she a one off,or do you still have a dog capable of the same feat

She was a collie/greyhound dog, back on a three quarter saluki. I still have one or two dogs from her line.

The most rabbits Ive taken in one night over the last 4 years or so, in Ireland, is less than 20.

Its not for the want of trying Jack, but there are jack shit rabbits over here worth talking about.

Im afraid that I have to travel across the water these days to achieve larger numbers of rabbits.

30 years ago ,the reverse was the case, as I had many English and Welsh lads come to hunt here with me and it was not unusual to be getting bags of 400 rabbits over a weekend.

And no I certainly dont have a dog capable of doing 100 rabbits now, unfortunately.

and has for getting out ,i will be attempting the 100 with 1 dog my self ,with a few friends in the next couple of months ,all will run 1 dog rabbit after rabbit untill it cant continue running ,this will take place on a few nights ,and the rabbits ARE there to do it that is why i want to see how many we can get ,it is nothing to do with proving a point .but i wont be posting on here how we get on ,even if it can be done .

some advice-take a shovel with you. To over run a dog like that is sheer stupidity. Best case scenario-you carry the dog off the fields. Worst case-you bury the dog. Ive done all the numbers games and lost an exceptional bitch at the end of a grueling nights work.

forget the numbers and enjoy the sport. 100 one dog-CANT BE DONE.

When you say that you lost her stormboy, did you look everywhere.....she may have got a belt of an electric fence that was connected to the mains and died on the spot.

Died when i got home-should have stopped lamping long before i did. Killed her just trying to make the numbers. Never felt such a c**t in my life.

the numbers game will shorten a dogs working life at best - at worst.............Like i said , never felt such a c**t.

Years ago when i were a lad :tongue2: ,we used to do a place that was heaving and i mean heaving ,the grass was like a bowling green and this was the farmers mowing grass :icon_eek: .We relentlessly did it every Friday night with dog and .22 but never made an indent .My lurcher at the time was a terrier cross long dog ,a stamina machine if ever there was one .One night we tured up with dog and gun and started a circuit as we always did but that night was different .The wind was strong enough to prevent my mate from holding the .22 steady so the dog ran everything .Squatters were aplenty and these she nailed in style ,making the bag grow fast .She ,the dog in question wouldnt entertain a long slip as she'd seen enough rabbits to know she was wasting here time .She wasnt the fastest but rabbit sense she had aplenty .I never saw her wrong footed by a rabbit out its seat and honestly never saw a rabbit make 20 yds if it was on the move to start with .We took her for granted and i would love her sort today but back to the story .We left the rabbits for collection, all paunched ,at places we could get to with the van and carried on around .Neither of us counted but i knew we were doing well .Bracken was off the slip most the time and killed the rabbits before they came to us ,leaving them to run another .We finished the night with a very respectable 74 and one leveret .That dog was still up for more and we could have gone round again but we both had work and numbers mattered nothing to us ,just the running of the dog .

I am in no doubt that the ton has been done before and will be done again .

Good luck to all who have faith in their hounds and to the doubters who dont have faith in themselves .

i can asure u ,i will know when a dog has had enough ,iv seen enough of other peoples dogs die in the field ,because of their stupidity ,so i wont be needing that shovel ,and i agree it CANT BE DONE iv been at this game long enough to know that ,but i will have a chance to see if it can, given the right night, the right dog in the right condition ,in the right hands , the right number of rabbits to make it possible

You're right there-stupidity it is. I'm sure you will know when your dogs had enough-i thought i did. And it will be long before a ton is reached.

Knock yourself out and good luck.

I think getting 100 rabbits in one night is possible IMHO (starting at 9pm and working through until first light), if the dog is fit enough and the area holds loads of rabbits and hasn't seen a lamp.

The point is though is it really worth it ? :o , I think that the dog would tire and be more prone to making mistakes and ending up injured and even if you got £2 per rabbit ( I know it won't happen), it wouldn't be enough to pay the vets bill from any resulting injury, so therefore IMO not worth trying, if an area really was that badly nfested a .22 Rimmy would take the edge off and allow you to enjoy some serious sport.

The numbers game is not for me  , I'd rather not risk my dogs health and forking out my hard earned to a vet, far better to enjoy the 100 rabbits over 4 nights IMHO ;) .

I wonder how long it will be before someone posts a picture of 100 rabbits taken in one night on this thread? <_< (I did briefly think of saving up all my catches for a few weeks and picturing them with my pup stood over them, Me the great white hunter :clapper: )

dont see why it couldnt be done, ive had 27 in daylight before i put a ferret to ground. if i can remember right it wasnt much over the hour for some reason the the biggest majority of the rabbits didnt run even when the dog was picking one up rabbits sitting feet away didnt move. this was in dunsyre there were plagues of them, was working at the same farm not so long ago and never seen one rabbit.

i think back in the days when there were around 100 million rabbits in britain (pre myxy) it could have been possible, there were whole tracts of land that were unusable because of the amount of rabbit piss contaminating the soil. now the dog would have to be a clever one, maybe a good collie x would do well, expending the least possible energy, stalking right up close, if you found some land where the rabbits had never seen a lamp, you would have alot of squatters, and if you did it right, maybe just maybe you could get a hundred rabbits. today. not a chance. we have around 12 million rabbits i think. so as has been said, you cant catch whats not there.

even so i reckon although bags would have been bigger, its unlikely that 100 could be caught in a night. it would be some helluva dog.

...and what lamps were available pre-myxy 1953/54?
