jackson2kaii8 5
This will probaly start something and people might tink its cruel but if hes not interested starve him and he wil go down the hole because he will no that there is rabbit down there to eat!!! Quote Link to post
stubby 175
try him if he gets no better, i no what i'd do no point of being soft, you got to be cruel to be kind. how does knocking it on the head, become kind yes, if it was in pain, dying, but becuase it aint going down holes my best workers took until their second year to mature enough, seems people want it to bolt rabbits, knock them on the head, and gut and skin a rabbit in their first months of life, otherwise its a no good ferret as for starving it, yeah that'll really work well wont it Quote Link to post

I always find that a starved fert, low on energy works better than a fed one......unfecking beliveable .So the first kill in,he'll have a good feed & you'll have a bit of a wait on your hands. Don't know what some people want from their ferts on here....give the hob a chance,i have 2 hobs coming into the 2nd season,1 still needs bringing on a bit more but he's done ok last season..no world beater but has done his graft & as for knocking ferts on the head...just goes to show the calibre of the owner in my eyes Quote Link to post
noddy6560 0
If the ferret doesn't come good, why not put him to a rescue, they will rehome him as a pet ? Quote Link to post

jenksi87 3
stick with it for a bit mate. my jill was exactly the same, she works fine now. patience is the key. i thought about giving her away and i'm really glad i didnt! she's got 2 of this years young to teach now, cant wait to get out with them.if he's the same after this season finishes then think about giving him away as a pet. good luck whatever you do JENKS yes a couple of times i have bolted rabbits after he been through, with the other ferret but i will give it some more time i have done a couple of burys with both which had fresh shit outside and in the entrances but rabbits bolted, is this common any advice for the nets though because he is an absolute nightmare to work atm when he tries to get tangled put your experienced ferret in first mate and enter the other straight behind. have patience though, it can take a while. i put my jill in when i knew there would be a good chance of young in. it soon sorted her out. as for the nets mate mine did exactly the same. its something they get used to after a while. i have found that my new spun poly nets are much better though so i would advise buying some of them rather than using nylon. doesn't tangle and due to the added weight the ferret doesnt knot up in it as easy. there a bit more expensive but worth every penny. philipmurray 0
What are you feeding him and how often.......! Quote Link to post
The one 8,463
This is why i would only take kitts from a proven working breeder how old is your hob ? How much work are you giving him? Has he ever bolted a rabbit ? If you pass him on he could be breed from and produce more non workers Hob's will pull nets down to get out a burrow trhats why most folk use jills as being smaller they will pass threw the meshes on a net Quote Link to post

I think you'll find this will just train him to kill under and be a nightmare to pick up when dug to Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
I have never understood the logic of not feeding the animal the night before , i am grumpy & down right vicious if i am deprived my food , so i imagine the ferret also is your ferrets wont give there best on an empty stomach if your cars low on fuel or completly empty it wont work , same for the ferret Quote Link to post

A well fed ferret is a better worker in my opinion like Quote Link to post
droid 11
If you pass him on he could be breed from and produce more non workers So following that 'logic' he was bred himself from a 'non-worker'? Quote Link to post

tullfan 0
also completely unrelated how do you work a bank which is one giant warren when you dont have enough nets. is it just a case of getting plenty of pairs of eyes and longnets and letting the stinkers run riot thanks rob last year we ferreted a bank with over 200 holes with only 50 nets and what we did was net the holes on the outer edges and entered the ferrets in the middle we lost a few but also backnetted a few. i also wouldnt block up any holes as suggested before as i would rather lose a couple of rabbits rather than take the chance of the ferret laying up if you dont have a locator as for the ferret keep trying and if he doesnt come good find him a pet home Quote Link to post
