Starting motor or battery

Recommended Posts

My Honda 300 of 11 years has had its first breakdown, after leaving the lights on 1 night the battery was ran flat, I got it fully charged and put it back in but the starting motor was only clicking when I pressed the ignition, I know the chage could have ran out off the battery but not that quickly, so what needs replaced? Starting motor or battery?

my motorbike(honda) did the whole clicking thing before but my problem was the cable going into the starter motor had frayed and snapped and was just arcing slightly. i had to trim and recrimp the cable and job done but i dont know about the big red but on my bike the cable is easily knocked, being close to the choke lever and such. so a similar thing could have happened

good luck with it

Have you got access to a volt meter? If so, check battery voltage, If this is ok it obviously isnt your battery, So next step, put negatave probe of battery to frame or anything earth, Put the posative on the nut where the wire goes into starter motor and press the starter button (obviously with key on!) If you are getting a reading, then the wire is ok from the batt to the startor motor (and the solonoid is working as it should),

If no reading try the Solonoid (this is by battery under seat, its a small round thing, with 2 connectors on the top (10mm nuts i think) try crossing these with something metal with the key on, if it doesnt start its a bad wire between batt and starter moror, or brushes

If it clicks its starter motor brushes, they are quite cheap say £20 ish and not bad to fit.

For a quick fix if it is the starter motor brushes, Give the starter motor a couple of sharp taps with a hammer.

Hope this makes sense and helps!

Took off the battery cover and tried starting, apears the click is coming from the solenoid, where will I get a replacement? Are they universal or battery specific?
