jamie g 17
I remember a few years ago when the Rifle smith from SYSS had just acquired one of those 204 jobbies. Partly out of curiosity about this calibre i invited him out foxing and to be truthful i wasn't expecting anything but runner`s using such a small projectile that`s (bullet head) for the thicko`s To be honest i was surprised by its performance but not influenced enough to personally own one either. As for the 22.250 Jamie i think i`d go one further and get the ultimate foxing tool which is the 243 mate Not interested in the 223 either though a superb fox/Roe round.. But realistically all i need is a 150 yards quite fox round which i can reload myself. Do Tikka still make a 17 rem model? 243 is only ultimate foxing tool if you can get it for deer mate. getting it for fox alone is very hard Quote Link to post
leadpig 0
have you thought about the fireball, less powder less noise less barrel ware for similar performance linky info http://www.riflesintheuk.com/cartridges.htm Quote Link to post

ezzy6.5 0
I have shot foxes with both the 17 rem (about 50) and the 17 Ackley (about 1/2 dozen) a mate had a 22K Hornet and a standard Hornet All of them will kill foxes out to 200m with ease. Ackley hornet was a bit of a pig to reload for, in fact all the 17'S are a bit tricky especially if you've got big hands. PERSONALLY, I don't rate the 17S as fantastic fox rounds, they are quiet, low recoil, flat out to 250m but the wind plays hell with them, reloading bits are sometimes hard to get hold of, I had a lot of runners especially with 20gn bullets. If I was only shooting 150 yds i'd look at a 22 Hornet or better still a 222 rem. if you are dead set on a 17 then a 17 rem fireball is worth a look, they are available in factory rifles, 223 bolt fact if you want a custom build, a lad local to me has just bought one but i don't know how he's getting on with it. it's nice to have something a bit different from all the others but who has the last laugh when you can't go lamping because no ones got any 17 cal V max's but all your mates are out with there 223's and 243's I don't use any of the above now, 223 rem is king. If you must have a 17 Rem then the Tikka is a great rifle. ATB Ezzy Quote Link to post
RicW 67
I could be in the market for a light calibre Foxing rifle and the 17 Rem has kind of caught my eye. Ballistics for .17 Remi comparison:- Hornady 20gr V-Max MV 4320fps 829 ft-lbs I could not find a Tikka, but Remington do the 700 BDL and Sako the Vixen in Remington .17. Quote Link to post
