Retrieving pigeons - Dog behaviour

Went pigeon shooting yesterday. I was on a flightline and the birds were falling into a wood behind and below me so my dog had plenty of retrieving 26 intotal. One thing I noticed was he was definitely trying to pick them up more carefully as things progressed to avoid being left with a mouthful of feathers and liked it when I removed the feathers from his mouth after each retrieve. Just wondered if anyone else has noticed this.

Dogs don't like the soft down on pigeons {other birds won't bother them} you done the right thing removing them . well done on the woodies there's none here
