CarraghsGem 92
my collie bitch is a good watchdog, lets us know if anyone is around the house at night, keeps the fox away from my hens and turkeys as well, only time i think she would bite is if a stranger tryed to grab her, she isnt the type to attack or even approach a stranger. my fella wont let me get a guard dog because (as he keeps telling me) "your a better guard dog"
mattydski 560
ive worked with all manner of guard dogs, and by far the looks of the dog is the key,a black GSD will scare folks more than a ridgeback, its the old psycology,if you want a dog thatll attack get a jack russel! i can tell you a gentle black gsd will insire more feer than a nutcase jack russel. Agreed.......... Its all about the phyc........ You just dont come near my house unless she knows you.... She is excellent in the family environment as well..... theferreter 311
my old staff bitch was a very good guard dog but the ultimate guard dog for me would have to be a rotweiler

greg64 2,850
I dont get how people think that bull terriers of any sort are good guard dogs They will be if a dog comes in your house but their in no way good for intimidation of man. I wouldnt be scared in the slightest if i seen a staffy in someones garden (if i had the intention to break in) as I know that the best they can bite is your ankle and their far too small to intimidate. Nevermind the fact that the bull terrier was bred to be aggressive to other dogs and animals (baiting etc.) and to NOT under any circumstances bite people. In my experience Mastiff types and herding type dogs have been and always will be the best for guard work. For example the origin of the GSD (herding), Rottie (herding), Alabai (herding), Malinois (herding) even collies can put on more of a show then most they just dont strike people as intimidating, but i'll be damned the day I get on the wrong side of a farm collie! A part of herding instinct in these dogs is basically a 'guard' instinct as well. For instance they have to protect their flock/herd from wolves and other predators and they can do with ease. In the modern day the flock/herd is substituted by their family and they will guard and protect them as they would their flock. ATB Jordan never be intimadated by any breed of bull terrier is a very brave statement to make Edited January 18, 2011 by greg64
CarraghsGem 92
very few dogs intimidate me either, the yappy dog is more dangerous to a would be burgler than a big-ass german shepherd for example, met a few aggressive farm collies as well in my time, only dogs that would be a threat would be akitas, certain mastiffs, and 1 rottweiler i once met called major, that dog would attack with very little provocation. other rotties are no threat whatsoever in comparison. Cold Ethyl 63
Both my lurchers and the terrier dont let strangers in lol.Ive had to put my lad especially in a crate a few times when the housing officer was in or even some friends of mine took him ages to just go and settle when they come in.Hes super defensive of the kids too ive even seen him watching me when i was carrying on with the kids. The terrier is pretty well behaved until something happens lol and the bitch is the same as my lad even once she realises you let them in she still sits and growls she still hates my mum lol and will constantly growl at her from the distance and even take a bit of meat or whatever off her then go back to growling. In fact my lad nearly ate my mates stepdad last week had him pinned against the back gate cos he just walked into my mates house and hes never met storm before i had to drag the bull x in the house and lock him in a room upstairs. He also went for a mate of him because i was carrying on and ended up backed in the corner and he took offence thinking i was in need of his help.I pity anyone who tries to get in here lol.
