driller killer 33
Hello! I am looking to get a dog probably in about a months time, im new to lurchers but have had dogs all my life. I have a 3yr old son who, like most boys, can at times be a bit bosterous (is that the right spelling??). I will obviously keep an eye on this an keep my son in check but i need a dog that wont react in a vicious way if i have my back turned for a bit, planning to get a young pup an will allow some rough and tumble so the dogs young enough and is used to having his ears etc pulled on the odd occasion. I will only be using the dog for rabbits out with my ferrets so prob after something with a bit of whippet in, Also possibly a bit of Bedlington maybe collie, and a few other things i wouldnt be adverse to, but no bull in it, just personal preferance, and i have no need for bull in it. Im after a bitch, (is there much differance between bitches and dogs with kid tolerance?) Does anyone have any experance/opinions with what breeds are good with kids and what to avoid? Oh also i have a mate who thinks merles with blue eyes are to be avoided, thinks theres something not right with them, merles are one of my favorite markings, i think there gorgeous looking, any opinions on this? Thanks in advance for reading my essay and for any responses. Cheers Neil Oh sorry also, if any one will have a litter that they think might be suitable in a monthish please let me know, I live in Devon but happy to travel a resonable distance for the right dog. Cheers agin Quote Link to post
Guest bluemink
If I were you I would go for a pure whippet. Quote Link to post

Hunting and with kids, also the cost of a pure whippet. Do you have one? how do you find it, Thanks for the advice though, its appretiated Neil Quote Link to post
Guest bluemink
They can be delicate but not if you go for some good lines like sooty sam etc. They can be expensive but I personally think there worth it. mine is very good with kids. and getting there hunting wise. Quote Link to post

Thank again bluemink, Its definatly worth considering, what kinda price we looking at? That kinda size would be ideal for me as only after rabbits, what they like for training/obediance? Was thinking collie maybe for the same reason, and maybe a merle, i know shouldnt go by what they look like but i do love merles. Will be my first lurcher but i am used to training dogs with general obediance, will also be doing lots of research, unfortunatly i dont know anyone with working lurchers i could go out with, maybe i will see if i can hook up with someone once i have done some basic training? Obviously you cant beat a pure whippet for speed and monuverability (dont know how to spell!) Luckily my new job im my own boss so dog cant come out with me, and cant take time off when i want for training sessions etc. Quote Link to post
Rory4 267
iv got a collie whippet first cross, think it would be a good cross for you or maybe go for a 3/4 whippet 1/4 collie. she has been around my young neice from a pup and is great with her. Quote Link to post

Hes dad was allmost pure pit, a beast of a dog, lovely just as long as you were not another male dog, he would go for the kill and be easily capable, saw a couple of close calls, one involved the other dogs owner sticking her finger up his arse to get him off her dog! But i dont fancy bull in it, nothing wrong with them at all just not what im after. Cheers Stag1 Neil Quote Link to post

poacher3161 1,766
Alot of the crosses thats been mentioned would be ok.But your 3 year old its important that he is taught not to pull and tug pups about as young pups soon pick up on a young child that will play and tease and a pup will always resort to using his teeth in playing.[bANNED TEXT] my grandkids come my lurcher pup gets a bit giddy for a wile she seems to scence that they are young and will play wich they do but always supervised, atb dell Quote Link to post
