Hollie 21
Morning guys. Ok, i am taking Kylo out for a shine about tonight, nothing serious, just to see how we do. Now my question is......how do i start? i mean when i get into the field do i shine my lamp about to see whats there 1st (or will that freak them) OR do i walk along the hedge to middle of field, put lamp on and walk towards bunny? I know this probably seems stupid to you guys but i don't want to mess it up Any advice would be great Thanks x Quote Link to post

fireman 10,993
You'd be best waiting for the moon to drop first Hollie but if you are going to go anyway then have the wind in your face and the dog on a slip.Enter field and turn on lamp, don't be tempted to loose him on the first bunnie you see but try to pick one close by that has squatted down.Walk the dog up to it allways being ready to slip him if the bunnie gets up and he has seen it,when your close to the squatter then gee the dog up and try to get the bunnie up and running, stamping your feet and hissing can do this. When the dog lunges loose him off and the rest is up to him,if he catches try not to chase him round but kneel down and call him in.He may mess about a bit due to him being pleased with himself and wanting to show off, patients is the order and he should come in with it in the end.Try still to be quiet(although hard when the young uns take there first prize)as there may be a bunnie or two still sat out,on with the lamp again and as he gets used to the game your'll be able to slip him on bunnies further away.I allways hiss my dogs when there's a bunnie in the beam so even if they can't see it and i can they learn theres something there when i hiss, remember though your stood higher than him so like i say you may see it ,he may not.Good luck anyway and let us know how you get on.. Been out myself a few times this week and will be out again tonight, have caught a few things so can be done in moon light but it is better without it. bird 9,970
I wouldn't go out while its a full moon Yes , while its your first time+dog so you want the best chance for your dog. When you do go out you want the edgerow to you back, but this is where it can go wrong sometimes unless you know the ground.?? If you know where the rabbits might run [great], if not [try] to get as close to the rabbit as you can.because which way the rabbit try to run your dog can cut it off and put a strike in quick. Do the same with squatters. And dont give it to many runs to start with.? Its sounds harder om the[ NET] but out there its alot easier. Try what ive said, ive been at it [25] years and ive done ok how i do it. Dont forget [you] will some good+bad nights, just keep at it Quote Link to post

I didn't even realise it was a full moon.........maybe thats why i feel like getting drunk!!! I am going to go tonight because i have a babysitter (which doesn't happen very often) so want to make the most of it.................i don't mind if he doesn't catch, i just want to try. I think he will retrieve it back, he bought me a mixy the other day and retrieves things when we are out (even brings me the post!!!) I think i have it sorted really just a few things i wasn't sure of (like at what point to turn lamp on) we should be ok and hopefully he will catch Thanks for advice given so far Quote Link to post

fireman 10,993
Walk into the field a few yards then turn it on,try to get between bunny and holes but at the side a bit as if the rabbit runs past the dog he'll have to turn right round to chase it where as if to the side he can get on it's scut.As for the lads with there bumfors and hammerfors, there for sh*tting out of and hitting nails.Bit slow you Norfolk folk eh lol. Hollie 21
We went out as planned, there was nothing on 1st half of field so we walked along the hedge to otherside of field, had a shine and there was only 2 bunnies out so we walked further along the hedge, slipped him on 1 that was probably a bit far away for his 1st try but he was on it like a bullet he coursed it excellently but at one point we lost sight of them, shone light around and the rabbit had given Kylo the slip and had squatted in middle of field, we kept light on it hoping Kylo would see it, he did but not as quick as he should have done (i will work on him following the beam a bit more) once he had realised what was going on he chased it hard down along the hedgerow and followed it into cover at which point i turned the lamp off and he returned back within about 30 seconds gave him loads and loads of praise and decided that would be enough for the 1st night (seeing as there was no more rabbits on that field anyway!!) Very very happy with him and boy WHAT A THRILL to see my dog running like that. We both have alot to learn but i am confident that with more experience he will do what he was born to do Quote Link to post
