using a .243 sound moderator for .22-250

Recommended Posts

My Dad has recently purchased a .22-250 rifle and currently uses a ASE UTRA sound moderator for his .243 rifle, is it perfectly ok for him to use it on his .22-250 as well.

Also, what ammunition would anybody reccomend for use with the .22-250 its a heavy barreled remington.

Thanks

he can as long as he has a slot to use a mod on 22/250 which im sure he does i dont no how the law works tho about filling the slot. i guess he could do it so he uses the mod for both rifles. the main thing is tho he has a slot for a mod for 22/250. as for the ammo then reloads are best but if you only want to use faactory ammo there a a good amount to try. you need to find out which ones work best for yourself tho as each rifle is different. even if you had two rifles the same make and caliber.

i would try winchester silvertips in it 50 grain or 55 grain there very fast and accurate in most rifle i have know people to use them.

i no a lad from rugby and his dad only uses them as he dont reload. he is getting 1/2 inch groups which is more then you need for foxing imo.

he has a remmy heavy barrel 22/250.

like i said each rifle is different tho but its a start. tryed sako 50 grain softpoints in my 22/250 winchester hb and they where pretty good along with 55 grain federal ammo.

but i use winchester silver tips at moment as i havent still got round to sorting my gear out for reloading.

Hang on a mo . . . If your dad has his FAC conditioned for a moderator on the 22-250 no sweat legally. Whether the 243 mod is safe to use on the 22-250 is another question. I'd say yes but I can't claim to speak from experience. Theory says yes but don't find out the hard way!

cant see why not ?

that may be true, but does the 22.250 not produce more pressure?

check with the gun smith bud, better safe than barrel split with all of the implications.

ggod luck

a .22 is larger than a .177cf but the mod would not be suitable or proofed. other way around is ok( standard mod bore for both)

No, the 22-250 doesn't produce more pressure. They're all fairly similar, and a mod will take a calibre as big as the hole in the front allows. Which means yes you can use a 243 moderator on a 22-250!

that is right. if a mod is stamped 243 then you could us it on any cal up to 243. but some places only stamp a mod for said.. caliber ie 17 hmr then they only like you to use it on hmr,

if he wanted to use it on 308 then thats different matter :D but he wants to use it on a caliber with smaller bullet so all will be well

so an 8x57 mod can be used on a 300 win mag rifle?

smaller projectile, bigger load and pressure. i would check with a firearms dealer.

just my over carefull nature i suppose.

for example a 17 hmr mod is ok with a22 rf( a bigger cal). the 9.3x 74 produces nowhere near the pressure of the 9.3x 64?

you couldnt use 17 hmr mod on a 22lr if its a true 17 hmr mod like a whisper or a dm80 as the exit hole is to small. sak ones are fine as they are made for a 22 cal bullet

As stated as long as he has it on his ticket to use a mod for 22.250 then yes he can use it but call your FEO about it for loop holes. As long as the srew cut on the rifle is the same as the mod the 243 mod is more than able for the 22.250 & as for ammo 50g-55g ammo will be what to go for but its trial & error with ammo.

Thanks

Hi you mention the 8x57 i used to use a 8x57js but as for your mod answer the magnum rounds are a whole diffrent ball game & you need to state that when buying the mod as a 30cal mod would not be fit for a 300 win mag dispite being a 30cal too. Alot of mods state there use on web sites for cals ie can be used up to 300 win ultra mag or for up to 25cal etc.

indeed. Manufacturers state the maximum calibre moderators can do. it is NOT a question of a proof mark, for reference, as moderators do not need to be proofed as they are not a firearm or part of one.

Waidmann, in terms of which is greater pressure, you need to be talking volume of powder and bullet weight, therefore energy - 22-250 is smaller than 243 in every way. 30-odd grains of powder vs 38-45 grains, and bullet weights of typically 50 grains vs typically say 85, so obviously if something can handle the bigger calibre it'll work on the smaller one!
