johnmac666 2
ive been toying with the idea of a working dog & still cannot make my mind up what/which to get, i already have 2 American Bulldogs ( i dont work them ) , if i got a working dog would keep it outside in kennel, anyway i have been offered an italian greyhound x whippet free now i have no experience with any type of earth/running dogs so what would you people reccomend ? i cannot make my mind up as i really do need a dog that can mark & tell me someone is at home which will save me time but fancy lamping at night as well , so what dog for first time is the question, have kept dogs for 20yrs now from staffs to pit bulls & now AB , im 42 so have got plenty of experience handling dogs any info & advice on breed would be appreciated, regards john Quote Link to post

lurcher lass 9
personally i wouldn't touch it, italian greyhounds are very small little dogs and light framed, whippets can be big boned working type or the lighter racing type, sounds like you'd have a very light dog here to be honest . . it may turn out to be a grand little dog and prove me wrong but i'd say to go for a breed thats already proven . what typeof work do you want the dog to do? if you want a rabbiting dog, whippet x greyhound would be grand hope this helps mate Annemarie xxx Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
The bull cross will be ideal for you due to your exspierience with bull breeds more so than a whipp/italain grey but its just my opinion.atb dell Quote Link to post

Malt 379
If you're interested in rabbiting, then it's also worth considering one of the beddlington crosses. Beddy/whippet, beddy/greyhound or beddy/whippet/grey. Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
IMHO thats bad advice that L L has gave you as having owned and seen this cross over the years their is better suited crosses for ferreting and lamping and most lurchers will do both if enterd correctly.Theirs a litter on this site that would be my choise over a whipp/grey.They are grey/beddy x grey/collie if the mix comes right ie the collies brains the bedlingtons tenacity coupled with the greyhounds speed and reflexes imo i think you could do a lot worse.atb dell Quote Link to post
Wild_and_Irish 11
I wouldn't take that dog for free! Italian greyhounds are toy dogs, and are tiny, have brittle bones and I doubt they could make a good cross. Quote Link to post

Easy to train, etc. See when folk start adding too many crosses into a lurcher it's a toss up what you end up with. You want to add as much racyness(f**k me that can't be a word) as you can cos a slow dog ain't catching f**k all if you get my drift. With a 3/4 grey x collie the worst that will happen is it might turn out big which to be honest, forget what you hear, no dog is too big to catch rabbits mate. Quote Link to post
twoface14 1
well thats the best bit of advice you've had so far a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie would be just right for what you want, marking when ferreting and with the speed to catch any that slip the nets, take most things in the day or on the lamp.
