Trev 4
Well Lads lets see your wheaten hounds ill start heres my 12 month old dog hes 2nd cross back to a pure hound looks like deerhound x to me mate i had a halfxwheaten about 15 years ago came from ireland and was from good stuff,he was a good dog but liked to fight to much and would course other dogs and was so placed with people but was a liabily with any animal it got near including dogs would run into fences and often would try and jump through windows,he broke his neck in the end at about 2years old,ive never seen another for years i think there far to fiery and to game to be a good allrounder, but if you hunt alone with no other dogs they are A1,maybe the show ones are less mad but the trial line wheatens are the devil himself, they are hairy bull terriers, funbob Have you based your assumptions of the type on one dog funbob or have ye seen a decent amount of them run?? Ive seen some decent wheaten crosses in my time, none of them fought with any dogs and were completly sound with stock. In the right hands they can be serious dogs and would make a decent all round type, thats my opinion based on what ive seen with a decent amount of this type. They will do everything a bullx will do if thats what ye like and they are faster and more agile imo. Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,322
mine will fight if pushed but he isnt an over aggressive dog pretty well ajusted dog alround really. a lot of these traits are there in terrier breeds. but are easily controlled and chanelled in to there work. ozzy has a dislike of strangers. and tends to over guard. but apart from that he is a pussycat. work wise he is full on and suits me fine. he will also work alongside my terriers and ferrets. and rear pups for me i cant speak about other wheaten crosses but if this fella was given an inch as a young dog he would have took a mile. definately not suited to inexperienced or over enthusiastic owners. i like em Quote Link to post
Trev 4
Bob ye would be suprised how many decent wheaten type lurchers there are in ireland mate, there not only a luchermans dog but alot of terrier men like them to. But like all types there they also throw up the bad ones and like any terrier type lurcher they can be head strong but in the right hands they make top class working dogs imo. Quote Link to post
