stevemac 434
Gday young fella, what you decribe is the nature of the beast really. what you need to do is start to do is at home start by simple things like making sit for his dinner keep this up always as it teaches them to associate you with good things. the next thing would be to start recall training at home using a long lead attached to the dog using a call or whistle that you want to use to call your hound (hunts man uses a horn to communicate with his hounds) call him then pull him to you with the lead then praise him and give him a small amount of food. keep this up over several weeks until he is comming to you with out using the lead. then you can try this out in the feild with the lead on at first. Consistance from you is the only hope you have reily as you are going against the in built nature of the dog to put his nose on a scent and go flat out. good luck with him. stevemac

othickman 6
Two things: firstly, you should buy a dog training book, preferably before you get a dog, but anyway they're well worth the investment, I can't remember what we got but if you look on a site like amazon and get what seems to be most popular... Secondly, how old is he? My dog, although he had constant training on his recall, he wan't too good at it, but when he was two, he started to be better, and when he turned three it just kind of clicked and now he's perfect. I have no science or anything to proce it, but a fair number of people seem to agree that most dogs calm down once they hit 2.5 / 3 years old. Good luck.

Hannah4181 260
Thats because he's a hound! Its what they do i'm afraid, they hunt with their nose and follow scent. If i were you i would try to get some really smelly treats that he likes, (cheese, cut up hot dogs, fresh chicken, slow cooked liver) and practice on a long line whilst out walking. Call him back every couple of mins and make a big fuss of him and give him the treats. It will take a lot of patience and consistent training, his breeding will make it much harder as well, but you may be able to get him to a decent enough level of recall. Good luck. JordKil 0
I met this woman a while ago when I was out with my dog and she had 2 beagles. The one thing I asked her was how she had their recall so good and she showed me these remotes and said thats how. Turns out she was using shock collars to get their attention when they went off on a scent. Worked a treat as well. But you will have to get basic training first. mushroom 12,908
Firstly as Hannah said you've got a hound this is what they do!!!!! Secondly never give chase they think it's a game Thirdly: training should start in an enclosed space ie in the house/garden start with small distances to stay. Do not call the dog from the stay position. Return to the dog each time he gets it right with a treat, if he moves from stay position without permission grab the dog by the scruff (firmly but gently) and return to where he was told to stay when he has got this start recalling from the stay position but alternate between calling him over and going to him so that it never becomes routine. Do this every day for between 15 and 30 mins in a month you will see a massive improvement. But remember this is a hound they WILL go deaf when on the scent so if you want to work him find someone local who has experience with hounds and is willing to help, alternativly work him continental style with a long lead that you never let go off
