john robbo 30
Out this morning with a client leaving my house for 5.10 a 15 minute drive to the ground. a lovely dawn, and in the half light we set up a terget against some bales. there was time to have a shot at this end of the estate before we set off. take your time i said, click went the rifle, oh i thought an empty chamber. he cycled the bolt and a live round fell out! upon inspection it had'nt been struck. trying for a second time click again. something was wrong?? we stripped the bolt out and looked at everything , nothing was wrong. then looking at the bolt face i could'nt see any sign of the firing pin. Stripping the bolt it was missing?????? He said he had never stripped the gun and would'nt know how. Luckily I had the sako with me as i was going striaght to the shoot after if we were late finishing and i have been seeing a lame buck often. We checked his aim with my gun and he was fine so we drove down to the wood and slipped in. Only waiting 2 minutes and a doe and 2 followers walked past within 30m, It was a good test of nerve for young breeze but she just sat and watched quietly. Shortly after she had pasted we heard branches break from where she had just come. It was a buck A big buck. The video would'nt work again this morning which was a shame as he was coming towards us at a right angle. Any hows he got 50m off an in a gap in the trees. Broof i barked stopping him dead. The sako barked to sending the 125 nosler partion through his nearside shoulder cutting the top of his heart and shredding a lung before exiting leaving a £2 coin sized exit. He lept ran striaght at us falling 10m off before getting up and going another 60m before falling down and not moving. Watching him for 10 minutes there was no sign of life. Going to the area off the bullet strike, i let breeze have her head she found the claret immeditley. Following the blood she found him quickly. I was absolutley capped. A photo shoot and gralloched we were back at home for 7 so i thought i'd post this while i breakfast before i go to the birds. A good start hope all is well at the shoot. A nice head but no medal.
