Guest john5 Posted September 6, 2009 Report Share Posted September 6, 2009 if they are a pest then its maybe different up here a party of guns shot 60 canadas and greys in land we aint got a big population of them so it was well out of order but on the solway you get used to cowboys who dont respect the quarry the question i ALWAYS ask is " are these ,"are you capable of prossesing such quantitys of meat", i am far too aware of people shooting large numbers of birds just because they can pull the trigger , as for them being a pest speceis , it is only because the RSPB and DEFRA claim they are a pest (and both organisations are one and the same anyway ) Quote Link to post Share on other sites
Foxy09 3 Posted September 6, 2009 Report Share Posted September 6, 2009 Maybe you are right...Maybe he should have..........As I said ...Ethics is a funny subject.....as is the definition of wildfowling.....but I dont think it is fair to condem him when many others kill as many geese over inland decoys between more guns. As long as it is not wanton waste, and as long as it is not birds from natural European migratory flightlines .....if that were the case I would agree with you....that is when it is just not on. Still not had a shot on Canada's ........hopefully one morning this week ps just to start a debate........ what is sport...the skill in the shot or the number you take or the fact that you killed it or the fact that you ate it....... I dont like this notion of "Sporting shot"....it is about safety and clean kills regardless of how easy or difficult the shot was! Just a thought. That really is a question and a half, one which i think there will probably be alot of different answers for but ill throw my tupence in anyway, Wildfowling in my book is one of the pure forms of sporting shooting, ive done the lot, driven pheasants, partridges walked up rough shooting, pigeons etc but wildfowling is different, its about putting yourself in the right place at the right time in the birds (often harsh) environment, its about being able to call your chosen quarry into range of a shot from a long way off when it was heading in the opposite direction, its about getting up at 5am with the rain lashing off the window knowing you probably wont get a shot but might, being able to kill your bird instantly and above all being able to remember every single bird you took that season, thats what sport is in my book, i doubt that bloke who took all they canadas remembers any of them after the first couple... I agree John...has to be about the food ..traded off with whether it is sustainable. I am still convinced......that the ethics of shooting large bags of "introduced" Canada's is not the same as feral Greys or "migratory" geese.......... waidmann 105 Posted September 7, 2009 Report Share Posted September 7, 2009 as a question of ethics there can be no right or wrong. i think if the man has the opportunity,the storage,the time then fair play to him. how often do we hear of big bags of pigeon and rabbit being wasted? same ball game. they are classed as a pest/vermin/ neozoen. and should and must be culled/controlled. we took five geese and 4 mallard with 3 guns and throroughly enjoyed the weather. got a few bits done in the shoot beforehand. sat we took some more mallard( ten) and we shall have a go for some geese tomorrow evening. by no means do we intend to erradicate either species from our shoot but we do intend to enjoy our sport,protect the crops,and get some top class grub on the table. sustainability the use of a managed growing resource responsibly. every man his sport, and all respect to teh chaps who shoot what they need or want and can then enjoy the flight. many a feather in the cars and clean shot birds on the tables. atb Quote Link to post Share on other sites
