CarlZ 0
I fancy buying a decent archery bow, but don't know where to start. Does any one know where I can pick up a decent second hand recoil or compound bow, and what to be looking for regarding makes and models? (I don't want a crossbow) If possible I would like a bow that can be used for shooting targets, and quarry in a country where legal. Can any one help me out please! cyclonebri1 8
H'mmm archery, another one of my passions. I really do wish it was legal to shoot game with a bow in this country. Anyway several pointers, There are 3 main types of bow, long and flat bow, mainly for the purists then the recurve or competition bow and then my favourite the (american) compound bow. Its going to be pretty much essential that you join a club to get some shooting experience and to appreciate just how accurate the average club archer really is. With a compound bow most can hit a gold (bull) with 6 out of 6 shots at 50 yds and some at 90 to 100. that is dam accurate. Bow fit is more important in archery than gun fit in shooting so although there is a wealth of kit on ebay, you really need to take in a few archery shops to try for size. Power is also key, someone mentioned 30lb pull. That is very low for a compound, but the 1st time you try it you would struggle to pull that weight. But muscles develope very quicly and again most club shooter use something betweem 50 and 60 lb pull. That is the legal max in the uk and gives flatest flight. US hunters use bows up to 100lb. Mine used to shoot at 62lb and that was enough for me inspite of being 6ft 3 and 16 stone. I took up archery after shooting and was amazed at the rules and regs covering club shooting, they really are strict. I sense from your initial post that maybe field target archery would suit you best. This consists of lifesize rubber game set up in a woodland scenario, shot at from fixed points, and is about as close as you will get to bow hunting "legally" , in the uk. Anyway good luck and do some research, lots of good clubs and shops out there, you may have to travel but worth it to talk to the right people Edited to add; Where abouts in the country are you Carl Checkout Merlin for there own bows and the likes of Hoyt Edited September 1, 2009 by cyclonebri1 Quote Link to post
Guest hyperion
i used to do a bit of archery when i was a kid but stopped when i was seventeen as it was almost impossible to get arrows and new string ect for some reason!dont even know what happened to my old recurve! i hadnt picked up a bow for years then had a go at broadlands the other week and was well happy to find the instinct was still there! im on the look out for the right bit of timber to make my own bow now! cheers hyperion Quote Link to post
LordGamebore 0
I shoot a Turkish horn bow. It's great fun and very accurate. The thumbring draw takes some practice though. Quote Link to post
cyclonebri1 8
It's a great sensation making a good shot with a bow. Brings out the hunting satisfaction in all of us. In adition to the compound, which has to remain king as the most accurate and powerful bow, I also shoot the american flat bow, the original Red Indian sort. FANTASTIC and real back to basic stuff, Quote Link to post

FANTASTIC and real back to basic stuff, never could get on with a compound bow! part of that is me being an old romantic but also the mechanical feel of them too!, i had a go with a mates over fifteen years ao now and it was very good but just not for me! mind you the americans do some awsome stuff with them! see the link below! cheers hyperion Quote Link to post
cyclonebri1 8
Not read your links yet, but there was a very contravesial post a couple of weeks ago where an american hunter, female and not 1/2 bad looking "paid" to shoot and kill an elephant with a compound bow. Not a sporting example but does show what one can do. Quote Link to post
Guest hyperion
the links are just an american chap called joey behr shooting at over a hundred yards with a compound bow! the woman who shot the elephant was dared to do it i think! some thing along the lines of "your a woman, you cant do it" ect! she spent months building up the muscles to be able to pull the heavy bow needed to take the beast, much of the hoo har abouut that elephant was due to part of the story saying "it was then left to die over night" but then what else could they do? the americans regulary take every thing from brook trout and rabbits right up to brown bears and moose not just with compound bows but every other type of bow going! this guy ron laclair is amazing!! cheers hyperion Quote Link to post
cyclonebri1 8
They shoot carp with the bow too, not to happy about that and I bet the rest of the bivvy brigade aren't either But over there they are classed as vermin. I think anyone would be impressed with the long range stuff shown there, and yeah the old mountain man knows his stuff, Edited September 2, 2009 by cyclonebri1 Quote Link to post
Guest hyperion
i dont like carp much and cant see much but i cant really see the point in killing them for no real reason! though they do tend to make a mess of water ways if they are there in big enough numbers! cheers hyperion Quote Link to post
COMPO 54
wasn't it on that Robson Green fishing programme where they showed two bow hunters culling carp at night with a lamp during the closed season for hunting! extreme fish (lamp)ing! the arrows were attached to the rod by a line and reel, and they then used the bow as a rod and reeled in the carp! It appealed to me, shame we cant do a bit here with bows as it would appeal to me , an american lad i work with used to do archery in teh states, when he found out i hunted and shot he felt like we had something in common, he used to mainly shoot at competitions, but his instructor hunted bears with a bow? i couldn't comprehend stalking or waiting and getting really close to a bear and then shooting it with a bow and arrow??????
