A day out in the Yorkshire Dales with the Air rifle

Recommended Posts

After chatting to Leedavis off here we arranged to go out on some of my permission for a bit of a mooch around with the Air rifles. I popped up to one of my permissions on thursday to just have a look around and see if there were many rabbits about before I took him out, it was a good job I did because unfortunatly Mixi is around up there so I decided to take him right out into the Dales on to some new permission I gained in Febuary and have only been up there twice myself.

The spot is cracking and nestled in the shaddow of one of the 3 peaks Pen-Y-Ghent. He arrived at mine at about 8.30 this morning and we set off up there arriving at around 9.30. We set off slowly walking the fields me with my trusty old HW77k and Lee with his BSA Ultra, Its quite difficult up there due to the ground being littered with limstone where the rabbits love to hide so creeping up on them sometimes proves difficult.

For the first 30 minutes all we saw was the arse end of bunny's as they made good there escape. Then I spotted a rabbit about 45 yards away munching on some grass, now its a bit further than I would normally shoot prefering them to be within 20-30 yards but I had it in my sights and the cross hairs were right on its head so I steadied myself and took the shot THWACK perfect head shot. I gutted it then we moved on a little further up the hill and when we were peeking over a drystone wall I saw Lee slowly raise his rifle to his shoulder steady himself and take a shot THWACK! The smile on his face said it all perfect head shot and Lee's first kill. He jumped over the wall got the rabbit and I showed him how to gut it. We had a bit more of a walk around and on the way back to the car I noticed a rabbit about 3 feet from me hiding in a little hollow in the grass, It looked straight at me and in return got a pellet right between the eyes. So 3 in total not bad for a 1 and a half hour walk around.

All in all a good morning out, Lee thanks for coming it was nice to meet you and your welcome to come out again whenever you want.

No really mate it was that close, Ive never seen one so close before I think it thought it was hidden and didnt want to run off so I thought Id take it anyway.

well done then! wish the rabbits were that tame round my place, you walk into a 2 acre field and every bunny as far as the eye can see buggers off!

They normally do here mate they are really shy we must have seen the white arse of at least 30 as they were running away from us we only got the 2 good shots at some and then my one lucky one at the end. I nearly walked past it and I dont think it would have bolted as it was well hidden.
