i am getting a springerxcollie pup next week and iwas wondering when feeding on dry food should you give a supply all the time or a certain percentage of the pups weight such as 5% body weight?

thanks

i just dont want to overfeed also should this be given in a single serving or broken up in a series of meals and does this change with age

Speak to the person who you are getting the pup off

and see how many times a day they are feeding, ask how much they feed in each meal,

and what they feed, if the pup is 8 weeks then its normaly 3-4 meals a day,

reduce as they get older,by the time its 12 months it should be on 2 meals a day

never over feed a pup as you dont want to cause problems in the future - with bone structure (sp),

sprollies are also prone to getting fat quickly if fed to much.

FYI - wild and irish you should never over feed a dog or pup, it can cause more damage

them being over weight than if they was under weight, excess fat can deposit on organs

like the heart, it can put strain on the joints and can cause long term problems,

you want a pup to grow slowly, not be forced to grow up.

What I was trying to get across was don't starve your pup for fear of him gettin the slighest bit over weight.

3 small meals a day should suffice The recomended amount for his body weight broke up into 3 stages. And dont forget he will probably want worming.atvb dell

cheers guys they are currently on only 2 meals a day and have been wormed. should i change to 3 meals or leave it at the 2?

thanks guys

oh yeah, does the tin of sardines a week and some raw meat apply at puppy stages too and sardines in oil or sauce or what?

stick to the twice a day but best not to overface him with a large amount as he will know he has no competition from his litter mates and it could make him a picky eater.atb dell

I personally would feed 3 meals a day, however it very much depends on the pup. Some will eat and eat some are very picky. You will learn very quickly what your pup likes and how much he needs. Stick to the breeders guide lines whilst the pup settles in. Introducing raw meats and canned fish can be done very easily, again i would wait a few days and the pup settle in. I always start my pups on a mixture of complete and raw, maybe do 1 meal of each if your sticking to the 2 meals a day routine. The fish can be either fresh or canned, sardines in tomato sauce are excellent for joints and coat. Raw beef bones from the butchers are excellent for puppies as they help them with teething and also tire them out whilst they chew them! Probably save your mum's shoes as well!

The worming is also easy, just make a note from the breeder at what age the pups were last wormed. You will need to take the dog to get his vacinations soon so you will be able to buy wormers there . . . . i always forget but i think its , every 2 weeks up to 12 weeks, then every month up to 6 months. 3 monthly there after. Your vet will tell you though.

Very best of luck with the pup ...................... i'm so jealous, puppies are my weakness!
