At what age did your lurcher Peak?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering at what age did your best dogs peak?

I have got 3 dogs and my 2year old Saluki x Grayhound is really at the top of her game (so far) and definatly the best dog i've ever owned already and at just 2 years old!!! she is just awsome to watch run. I've just got my fingers and toes crossed that she gets no serious injuries.

So what age did your best dog peak? and when did they slow down? 8)

I would say about 4 or 5.. gotta have at least 3 or 4 seasons.. As for the slowin, ive had dogs that would hold there peak for 2 or 3 seasons, then i think its time to give them less work.. Im talkin about rabbitin n hare lurchers.. I havent had foxin lurchers long enough to comment but i would guess its about the same but maybe not able to work to an older age..

Edited to say.. Good thread btw

My dog came into his own at 4 and half, his whole attitude changed (like over night) He took no prisoners after that, he was so much more tenasious from that day on. So i think its mentally maturing that is as as important as physical.

Makes me chuckle when i see people getting rid of crap dogs as pups (they could be some fine dogs)

i notice with me fella when im out walking he wont leave my side ,he lets the younger ones run wild and burn themselves out ,he knows to conserve his energy.Hes more cute now aswell when it comes to foxing and more aggresive towards them ,i guess all this came with maturity, age and plenty of work most of all

edited to add this is probably one of the best ideas on here for a thread in a long time :yes:

Good thread Doug, i would say [4] by then they should be at the top of there Game. And you will know there [good+bad points] at that age. [5-6] still good, but starting to loose that bit of speed, that thay had at [4]. Pity they have to get older.

mine was at his best last season at the fine old age of 4

might he not be improved even more this season then? IMO you need to get your dog to 7 to be able to comment on when it was at its best, they peak and maintain it not peak and suddenly bang there past it

i have had a lot of coursing dogs over the last 30 years i think bitches peak a bit sooner than dogs maybe 4 years as a lot of people have said for a dog but i think bitches peak eariler maybe 3 years old i think bitches also seem to go of sooner maybe not all but in general a six year old bitch is finished in my opinon i know people may disagree but its only what i have found
