Muntjac RTA

Here's a munty I shot last night when I was out lamping foxes, he had clearly been hit by a car and was in some discomfort, when I picked him he had joints the size of golf balls and was clearly infected with both front legs broken. Upon gralloching, the kidneys were yellow, the spleen an unhealthy grey and the lymph nodes were swollen and brown. What a waste of a beautiful beast, I have certainly not seen anything of this quality on any of my land, the antlers are 4 1/2" and have a large girth. What made it worse was the bloke I was shooting with said "oh yes, there was a deer hit by a car near here on friday". I wish someone had told me then and I would have been able to put him out of his misery sooner. It shows how tough they are though as his stomach and intestines were full-although the infection would have caught up with him soon he was still moving and feeding. I know it's done him a favour but it put a real downer on the night. On a brighter note I went stalking this morning, left a good roe buck and shot 2 foxes next to a friends ducks, I shot 3 there on tuesday morning as well so that's a few more ducks for the shoot.

The caracass was obviously condemmed and the head has gone to a good friend who's a taxidermist as he had a job for a good munty head-I don't want it as there are no good memories attached to it.

What a cracking trophy , surely a Gold . Shame it wasnt taken via a good stalk. They are tough little deer . I really admire them and wish we had some up here .

I agree - superb animal, what a fantastic head. Never shot one myself (work in progress ;) )but that is certainly the biggest head i've seen. Do you have a side on pic? Just wondering if his canine's were intact or had they broken off?

I don't know what it would make, I have never seen one anywhere near as good as that on my land and I shoot several, it must be a medal of some sort i'd expect. I do have a side on pic but the canines are obscured by grass, they were not particularly big but one had slight tip damage that looked old to me as it had coloured over. Canines seem to be commonly lost or snapped and they regularly have ears in tatters, the neck is often slashed and scarred too. They have a reputation for being tough to drop but I've never found that to be the case.

i suppose the only good thing you can take away as a memory if you like is that you got hold of him and put him out of his misery before the discomfort and pain he was suffering got any worse and stopped movement & feeding he didnt die slow and painfully and thin

all the best

Not knocking your judgement mate but the state of the animal you described is not that of a RECENT rta .The insides would be still bleeding ,the belly blue and a graze mark of some sort externally. What you described is an old injury or simply old age.But that aside he was a truly magnificant beast .

What a shame: over the years I've found Munties with varying injuries: the classic wire hang injury where both hind feet have been almost severed: gangrene set in: horrible: poor thing still trying to hobble along. And several RTAs round here: the fresh ones we give to the dogs. My partner works on the refuse collection and they often find them: though his mates in the cab aren't too keen on riding round with a bloody carcase!-

I have to say that it is a fine head. The antlers are so very thick and must surely be graded high up the list.....It was a shame the motor vehicle had hit the deer, it would have been the muntjac of a lifetime to many of us...Thanks for sharing...JD
