POLICE have arrested three men at Claughton on suspicion of illegal hare coursing.

The three, understood to be from the Chorley area, were arrested at Lydiate Lane, Claughton, following reports that people had been seen hunting hares with dogs in a wooded area.

Their vehicle, dogs and mobile phones were seized by police following the early morning tip-off and a dead hare was taken as forensic evidence.

The suspects have been released on police bail until September 29.

The arrests follow on from a high profile investigation into hare coursing in Garstang and Over Wyre in December when police raided homes in Heysham and Lancaster.

Wildlife officers and RSPCA officials revealed that illegal hunting with dogs, including fox hunting, hare coursing and badger baiting, is rife in the Garstang area.

Hare coursing and other rural 'sports' involving hunting with hounds are banned under the 2004 Hunting Act.

The raids followed calls to police from farmers in Out Rawcliffe and Winmarleigh.

Lancashire Police Wildlife Officer PC Duncan Thomas said: "The Garstang area contains wide expanses of quality, flat farmland which provide perfect conditions for a variety of wildlife, including hares.

"Unfortunately, it also makes it a prime spot for illegal hare coursing and we are aware of people travelling some distance to the Garstang area to commit these crimes.''

PC Dave Kerfoot of Garstang police said: "Lancashire Constabulary remains committed to preventing and detecting this crime which is of significant interest to the local community and wish to extend their thanks to the members of the community who reported and assisted with this incident.''

If it hasn't been shot or knocked over with a car/bike and if it has got the dogs teeth marks in then they are looking at charges, as for the police they are a different story. I know areas where they aren't bothered about people hunting or fishing as long as we don't pinch stuff when we are out and about but other areas where they come on top straight away. Shame if they get charged though. We got caught years ago and they took the hares off us as evidence and all we said was prove they had been caught on one piece of land but not another and i'd be glad to plead guilty, in the end the charges got dropped

if theyve taken pictures of the dogs holding the hare on there phones which a lot of people do then you could say they are banged to rights not a leg to stand on really everyone knows about the hare ban now or they should do they should of been more carefull maybe they will next time thats if they havent had there dogs pounded i dont see how they could of been arrested if they wernt on land though beats me that one

Cops with their own bunny hugging agender. over here you get city cops that have been transfered to the country and harrass hunters on the road if they see a hunting dog on your ute its happened heaps and they end up getting their wrist slaped because they dont know the law and make shit up. we have the australian pig doggers association who will fight this bull shit with solicitors if needed, recon you blokes need the same.

i wouldn't say its the cops fault really, end of the day they have to do what their boss tells them to, last season when police were following the local foxhounds their was a couple from the next county, we wondered why they travelled so far for work and they explained that they ride out with the hounds during their free time so wouldn't be right to police their own hunt . . when it boils down its the stupid government that put these stupid laws in place in the first place,,,,i do hope these guys get off!! all the best lurcher lass x x x

You have got to realise that most of the police are now very PC and any body who as had dealings with them will know this. Its just a pity they dont go to these exstreams [bANNED TEXT] junkys and wat not are mugging and threatning people then again its a lot easier to get a conviction for a bit of hare coursing.:wallbash:

this is all our shithouse governments fault and all them who voted for em  cmon lads and lasses what did you really expect a labour government to do  theyve done exactly what i knew theyd do...ban hunting and bring the country to its knees, which is why i have never and never will vote for those tosspots,to turn decent law abiding people into criminals is a crime in itself, and come the next election some of you might actually think before you vote, hope the lads get out of this mess smelling of roses ;)

it sounds like a few farmers want to watch there step i know what happens around these parts to farmers kissing police arses, they find a lot of dead stock, i dont agree with it but some of the bristol boys that come out this way think they can do what they like and if there challenged the farmer finds a load of dead cows/sheep, then they wonder why it gets harder getting permission
