Wild_and_Irish 11
I've been doing some retrieving with my pup rambo for the last few weeks and found he only brings it back without hesitation with a tennis ball or something fluffly, and if I even attempt to do some retrieving when I start his walk he just runs around in circles, I've tried treats but he has no interest in them, anyone got any ideas on how to solve this? I know he's only 4 months and this could be seen as him just being a pup but I want to get him retrieving well as early as I can, and this is really frustrating me. ATB Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Just let mine get over the excitment of going out and let them run around a bit, then they settle down to work Quote Link to post
Wild_and_Irish 11
Just let mine get over the excitment of going out and let them run around a bit, then they settle down to work Thats what I meant when I said he won't retrieve at the start of his walk, my worry is when he starts hunting with his excitement all his retrieve training might go out the window. Sexy_Shot 5
i do what my elder brother taught me, whilst going out for the pot, give the dog its 'HEAD' ( let it have 10 mins to run around pointlessly or leave him to his own ) then he can concentrate easier ATB, thanks Trevor Quote Link to post

Their just mad at that age, your pups still very young, just let it run for a couple of minutes and settle down, then start with the training, it will come in the end, patience is the best training tool you have Quote Link to post

undisputed 1,664
I always start of in a confined space like a kitchen or long hall way before moving on to wide open spaces. to many distractions for a young dog keep it simple.....pups are mental when they start to find their legs....keep it to around 4 or 5 retreives a day. If its not trained in the yard it wont be trained in the field as the old saying goes/////goo d luck! Quote Link to post
jackson2kaii8 5
my uncle train springers be told me to go out in to a field with a big long wall and through the dummy and the dog wont run around you because the walls is there its ment to put manners on the dog and stop it running around you Quote Link to post
bird 9,986
Mate it dont meen feck all, because once they put there teeth on a live rabbit, it all goes out of the window Ihave trained lurchers with all kinds of dummy work, and when the swap from dummy to live game it is massive mate. With all dogs some [like] to retrieve and some [dont] fact, and you carnt make them . Take all dogs as differnt, and you wont go wrong Quote Link to post

ATB My bitch is 4 months and retrieves very well in the garden, but will not retrieve more than 3-4 times out in the field (at best). I just think there's too much exciting stuff there for her and, as a pup, she doesn't concentrate for too long. Letting her run around a bit first seems to help, but her mood seems to dictate the number of retrieves. I'm not too bothered at this stage to be honest. nasher1 258
All the above is good advice but whats the pups recall like, I recently had a simaler experience with my 6 month bitch, it turned out she was in season but I went back to basics and did all the recall training and all the other stuff and shes getting a lot better now, dont forget you need to reinforce training all through your dogs life to get the best out of it atb nasher1 Quote Link to post
