zini 1,939
Hi guys, girls, Can someome on here with plenty of trapping experience please tell me whats the best bait is for catching grey GREY squirrels in a cage trap? I have caught them before but am no expert. I used mais and bird peanuts but that was when the leaves were not on the trees and the tree rats were feeding more off the ground. On a area where i shoot there is lots of tree rats but they seem to be eating seeds fron the trees at the moment high up in the branches. Is there a good attractant that i could use to lure them to my trap? I have heard in the past people saying that peanut butter is good. Whats your ideas guys? Do the traps work best set on the ground or up in the tree when they are feeding high up? Ive made these traps today between the rain and the dog wanting to go out. Will these do the job? Cheers and regards Zini. Quote Link to post

bobndog 0
Peanut butter seems to do the job fine, do your traps lock shut? If not your squirrels will escape, they are resourceful little devils! Quote Link to post

bobndog 0
Just been talking to a pest controller friend, he baits with chocolate, he gets the out of date bars from a supermarket. He says that its the best bait, don't ask me how grey squirrels have a taste for chocolate though. Quote Link to post
ratcatcher 0
Maise is a very good bait as well as hazel nuts which can be drilled then threaded on a wire and hung in the back ofyour trap.If you're using live catch traps make sure you stay within the law and have drinking water in too. wife 1
Peanut butter seems to do the job fine, do your traps lock shut? If not your squirrels will escape, they are resourceful little devils! does the door lock shut mate?squirrels will go in the trap baited or not i have found, lol, but, maize is what i use, only got to speak to one of your local famers, and can freeze it as well, better off getting that door locked shut some how, and that mesh, they soon bite there way through it, welded mesh is what i find better, good luck on trapping them, speak to john b, he show you one of his traps that they managed to bite there way through,,looks same mesh as what you using, i have used the same mesh, and they also got through my traps in time Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Cheers Wife, Ill have to look at my mesh and put a spring on the door to keep it down. Anyone got a idea how i can keep the door locked? Quote Link to post
stubby 175
make sure you stay within the law and have drinking water in too. surely, this is only after you have caught an animal, the decoy side of a larsen, needs food/water by law as your keeping a magpie in there long term, but a live catch trap, that is being inspected every 12/24 hrs and then anything caught is being dispatched, has no need to have a water container Quote Link to post
wife 1
Cheers Wife, Ill have to look at my mesh and put a spring on the door to keep it down. Anyone got a idea how i can keep the door locked? well,i keep my traps simple, less springs the better 4 me,lol, all i do is on the door is have my door at 45 angle,on the inside of the door i have another bit of wire which comes down flat once the door has fell, this way the other bit of mesh which is attached lies flat on the floor,,up 2 you how wide you have the mesh, i only have it say 4 inches,, enough for them to stand on, so the squireel, rats, is standing on it, example being they trying to nose open the door, but cant cos they standing on the other mesh with there body weight which stops them from nosing it open,i use the clips off john b for attaching all my mesh together, never look back since i been making my own traps, i done the cable ties, also gardening wire, and other methods for joining mesh, depending on how much trapping you doing, you cant go wrong with the pliers and clips that john b supplys, i made some cat traps, also rat traps, squirel traps using the clips, hope the instructions with the door makes sense,if not i can send you some photos on a pm Quote Link to post
