the spaniel is supposed to quarter the ground in a pattern, never ranging to far, locate birds-flush them steadily and then retrieve the fallen bird to the handler.

If this were a Field Trial in the UK this dog would be ranging waaaaay to far, and he is missing a lot of ground.....
