BRNO Hornet Application in Eire

Frank / anybody: I'm psyching myself up to apply for my gun lisences. As well as air pistol, air rifle and shot gun, I figure I might as well go for broke and ask for a Rifle too. I've been listening and gather they'd possibly be more disposed to letting me cut my teeth on a ".22 ". It's further been suggested to me that a BRNO Hornet will do me for foxes. And that just about sums up my entire knowledge of the matter, at this point

What's to know, please? Twin aspects: 1. What's the craic with applying? 2. I'd like to hear active fox shooters views on the BRNO.

Thanks.

The CZ, as its now known, has taken over from the Brno, although the same rifle really.

Just that the country split and became the chech republic.

The CZ 527 .22 Hornet is ideal for county Lietrim foxes, as the feilds around their are small most of the time and farmers and houses seem to be everywhere.

In order for you to apply for a firearms cert in the republic of Ireland, you have to be firstly be living here for 5 years, its not written in law, but its made up here most of the time, as you will find out when you apply for your rifle.

Being a member of your local gun club is also a must with most Guardie ( police) and if theirs one in your area, try and get to know the folks who run it and chat and see what they can do for you. You will find most are very clanish, but time to get to know them might make a difference.

Its also advisable, to go for a shot gun for your first appllication, but this is allways not the case, as some folk have got a rifle the first time they have appllied.

DS, have you got previuos firearms experience? As this will also help, if you have had guns before.

To start with, get as many written permissions as possible, if you have your own land, all the better.

Then try and get to know and join a gun club in your area, to cover you for insurance ect.

Good luck,

Let me know how you get on.

Frank.

:( Aaaah, jesus, Frank! And I was so enjoying this place, right up untill I came across and read your reply there! Talk about a strong punch in the gut from the concrete hardened fist of reality! Jeez!

Five years? I get Irish f***ing Citizenship in five years, man! Passport, the whole shebang, as you know. Only I'd read elsewhere that that's the 'criteria' now ~ and a new, eased and liberal criteria at that! ~ for allowing an Irishman to apply to possess a 'Hand Gun'. So that rule trickles right down to even the most basic working tools? FFS!

As regards 'Laws' being 'Made Up' here? Been there. Found that! I Need, oh so desperatley, my .22 Air Pistol back. I'm a professional pest controller for chrissake! Without a suitable method of despatch, how the hell can I use cage traps??? That's like telling a Plumber to just get on without a wrench! I've been fending off work here and trying to convince people; 'Just wait till I have my gun lisences sorted out and I'll be right with you.' Five Years??? God, I'm getting depressed :( Might as well chuck it all up in the air and train as a f***ing Plumber!

I honestly thought it was just a personal quirk of our local Gard. He was patently hell bent against Anyone having Any sort of pistol on his patch. Regardless. If that's the party line .....

Gun Club? I have the number of our local Secretary in my pocket. I drink in 'Their' pub! I'd got the impression it was all a shade 'Masonic' too - That's why I thought I'd try to build up as much background information as I could before tackling them. I'd hoped to come across as more confident .....

Written permissions? My mate owns much of what I can see around me. He's more than welcomed me to go where I like, do what I like. He also seems perfectly at ease with unknown people wandering across his land, guns at the ready. A note from him will be just a formallity. I'll sort it out next time I see him. Best of all is, the land round here is in a bowl. Where I'd hope(d?) to be operating? Anything not too far above the horizontal would eventually meet earth. The only houses being way above, on the road sides. Like you rightly say; Our fields are small. As long as I mark where his cattle are harboured? No problem.

As regards previous history? Sure. I've owned shot guns before. I have my .22 air rifle and pistol in cold storage, waiting for me. I even have a certificate from a respected training institution; Safe Handling. In fact, I was far and away 'man of the match' with my accuracy that day too ~ though, personally, I feel that Must say more about the other guys and less about me that day! But, yes; I'm of officially unblemished character. I know which end to point and which end not. What to point it at and what not. When to squeeze and when not. And, when I point it, I tend to hit what I point it at.

Now you're telling me I just need to put that - and much of my ability to make an honest living - on hold for five years? Great. That's just ruined my day

Thanks for telling me like it is, Frank. Goodnight.

"Talk about a strong punch in the gut from the concrete hardened fist of reality"

Not a laughing matter I know, but I have to admit, I did laugh at this prosaic line.

It's all as Frank says, to be sure. But, you could do a few things and give it a try, sure they can only say no....

These are the basic requirements at the moment, as laid out by the Justice Dept.

http://www.justice.ie/80256E01003A21A5/vWeb/pcJUSQ5YBJWM-en

Get your European Firearms pass, if you haven't already done so.

Get insured with the Countryside alliance, or the new IFA Countryside membership deal http://www.ifacountryside.ie/.

Put your spoke in with the local gunclub, do some pro-bono work for a member or some other dignified crawling. If you are having difficulties with getting certification for firearms, the NARGC (the gun clubs governing body), is a great crowd to have in your corner. They take these matters to court and win them if it's humanly possible at all.

Don't tell the coppers that you are going to use an air rifle or pistol for vermin control, it's a target gun and nothing else.

Join a local/or nearest rifle/target shooting club. Do the proficiency courses. I know you have all that done before, but what you get locally will have more standing with the powers that be.

Best of Irish luck..

:good: Thanks very much for that, Macnas. Even more 'inside track', if not that much more inspiring of much optimism! I've taken so long to get back simply because I've spent all day digesting this.

Ok. I've lost my plastic and was expecting the fresh one today. Tomorrow then? And, assuming it'll get here, I'll join the IFA there and then.

Not really wishing to say too much more about it here, but you've certainly given me 'answers' to some of the trickier questions too ;) Probably saved me putting my foot in it there.

I'll be asking for the lower level option of shot gun. We have wild pheasents and hares around me here, but I've genuinely no wish to shoot either. Maybe a .410 with lowest powered 2" cartridges could even take over from my trusty .22 air pistol, if they're really That funny about them? All well and good me swinging the lead; But I have to work for other people. I can't ask everyone else to turn a blind eye as I bring out my lisenced 'Target Pistol'.

Nope. Looks like I'll just have to bend my ways to accommodate the law, as I've always done. Way it's going, I'll just be grateful to be able to possess the tools to allow me to work, period! Never mind choosing my favourites, or even what's best all round for the job :(

i asked about a single shot pistol once,,, my friends dad was a cop. he said it was lucky i went to him to ask that question because any other copper would have been out to the house to lift the guns off me. maybe things have relaxed a bit now? its quite a troublesome little island we have here :( ... DS when i applied for my .22 magnum the letter i recieved for the requirements also stated that for a hornet i would need to have permission of a 1000 acres of land and the land owner must not be the owner of a rifle nor must he have given permission to another rifle holder. my memory might have failed me but i think that was correct... probably not the same down there but i would like to see the comparison,, just out of interest!

Link to post

No, its not the same down here.

But, you do have to have at least 2 written permissions of land owners and they have to have the shooting rights. You also have to be a member of your local gun club, which is not that easy to get into, if you have not been brought up in the area and not many folks know you. :(

Things are about to get tighter still, as the new criminal justice bill is about to come in within the next month or 2.
