flies around hutch

Recommended Posts

hi lads what you need to remember is flies weather they r blow flies(blue/green bottle) or lesser house or even just common house flies these are an air bourne insect which live on ferret droppings, old food and even within the bedding they will lay their eggs within all of the above which then turn to larva then they pupate to adult flies ...

the best way to keep on top of this is hygiene make sure u clean the cages out everyday even 1s a week jet wash them make sure ur fert has no food hiding in its bedding fly screens are a good idea however ifyou dont do the above are pointless also look at where you are putting the old bedding /dropping because remember all you are doing is moving and larva/eggs to another place so if its next to ur hutch your still gonna get flies .if you hutches are in a shed you could also get an efk (electric fly killer) expensive but it will help

some thing else to look are you drains yes nothing to do with ferrets however these are hot spots for the full life cycle of a fly once they pupate and become airbourne they can go anywhere the life cycle of a fly is very short so if ur getting flies all the time then these are some of the things you need to start looking at .. 1 good thing is the majority of flies are seasonal so when the weather turns it should die down

hope it helps mate

get a jam jar with a metal lid make a hole in it big enough for a fly to enter put meat inside the jar close lid hang it off your ferret hutch ... the flies will go into the jar but cant get out ... empty when needed and put fresh meat in ... hey presto free fly catcher ...........
