Maria_ferrets 0
Around here it wouldn't be too wise to keep them outside anyways.. We have coyotes and foxes that rip rabbit hutches open, they'd do the same thing with the ferrets. Quote Link to post
sammy 0
castrating and spaying doesnt keep the odour down, but you can have there scent glands taken out. ferrets are perfectly happy outside mate providing they have plenty of bedding so i cant really see the need to kepp them inside. just my opinion matey Hi i have 8 ferrets & have been keeping them almost 20 yrs. I have a friend who keeps 4 ferrets in her house. They don't smell as bad as mine which live out side in a big cage & run. Castrated or spayed ferrets DO NOT smell as bad as whole hobs or un spayed jills. ( i have a vasectomized hob who dose not smell) House kept ferrets are bathed more regularly so don't smell as much. I found with my friends ferrets that they didn't smell at all. Ferrets tend to smell worse when they are in season to attract the opposite sex. The male will mark almost every thing he touches 2 say it's his territory & to warn other males 2 stay away. Kits tend 2 not smell as much but when they reach maturity they start to smell. I totally disagree with taking scent glans out of ferrets as it is totally unnecessary. The glans are there for a reason, they only skunk if they are frightened as it is a natural defence for them. The odor of a ferret depends on the handlers husbandry, if u keep a clean cage then they will smell less. Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
hi, i keep two jills in the living room. i clean them before work and when i get home. you do notice the smell when you come in,not a stink but a smell.when cleaned its fine. i keep them on newspaper with a corner litter tray and change the hammock every week. a plug in smelly thing in the living room and fanny is your aunt. i keep them clean of fleas.and do not bath them. its great having them in the house, the young terrier loves them( he does get bitten but is not bothered!) a good bit of exercise for the ferrets and pup when they are wrecking the living room of an evening and very funny to see. the ferrets nick his food and toys and he nicks them back after chasing them. at which point he is chased by the ferrets for a bit ( one of the jills is only 14 weeks old) he loves it and so do they. if he gets too excited the ferrets go under the sofa and take the next oppotunity to get hold of his nose/ear but let go as soon as he sqeaks! if that was my finger they wouldnt let go i'm sure. a working team who can enjoy the freetime too. what a sport we have!!!! is there another that can embelish your whole life? i'll have some of that one too. good luck for the season all.
