panda 0
Does anyone keep ferrets in the house? Do they stink the place out? Cheers Panda Quote Link to post
max abell 196
NO never have kept em indoors mate But there are a lot of people who keep ferrets as pets do keep them indoors Apparently if you get the hob castrated or the jill spayed it cuts down on the odour Not sure how true this is im sure someone on the forum can answer who keeps ferrets indoors Quote Link to post
jenksi87 3
castrating and spaying doesnt keep the odour down, but you can have there scent glands taken out. ferrets are perfectly happy outside mate providing they have plenty of bedding so i cant really see the need to kepp them inside. just my opinion matey Quote Link to post

Mine come in to house to play often, they are well behaved, and fun to play with...but they sleep outdoors!! Smelly link minxes!! Quote Link to post
joe14 98
Taking a ferrets scent glands out (that cannot be done in uk) does not cut down on the smell, they only use theese to skunk when they are frightened but some ferrets do it occasionally lol. Nuetering does cut down the smell, by neutering it stops the ferrets hormones which make the coat oily, and hobs coats yellow/orangy colour. An entire hob as much more of a musky smellt than a castrateded one. I dont keep mine inside but I know a few peeps that keep em inside, their ferrets are littertrained etc,you have got to keep on top of the cleaning though to keep smell to a minimum.. Theese people wash bedding 2/3 times a week and littertrays emptied everyday. Edited August 23, 2009 by joe14 Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
You wont get there scent glands removed over here , there even thinking twice about it in the USA where they mutilate ferrets at a few weeks old sadly Quote Link to post
solostoke 1
hi, i used to keep 2 jills in the house and it was ok if i cleaned the litter tray out morning and night. if you left it for more than this you definately knew ferrets were in the house!!! i changed their hammock tube thing weekly. other than that slight inconveniance its fine :-) and it is funny seeing them all the time. i also found my spayed jills smelt less than my unspayed ones, dont know if it should make a difference tho! Maria_ferrets 0
I have 3 jills and 1 castrated hob living in my bedroom.. It doesn't stink as long as I scoop their litter boxes every day or two Quote Link to post
solostoke 1
i found cat litter especially the odour absorbent ones to be even better for reducing the smell (something the missus was obsessed with!!!) but it was even messier than sawdust as they just wanted to burrow in it. lurcher lass 9
i kept my ferret kits indoors during the day, during and after they were weaned from the jill, means their introduced to human contact and noise from an early stage . . never noticed the smell really, apart from the odd funny look while standing in a que at the bank!!! lol Quote Link to post
fishfish 17
i kept my jill indoors when we lived in a flat,to rid the smel 99% add garlic granuals to the water,if you put it in the food they wont eat it ,but they have to drink.honestly this works. Quote Link to post
