People have stated the answer already, repetition. Where they said to take the lead on and off so it's not associated with end of the fun. Same with the van. When it see's the van it knows it's home time and end of the fun.

So as said, get her on the lead before hand and into the van, have a coffee and fag, back out for another 5 Min's mooching then back to the van again. try that a few times each session so the van isn't an end to the fun.

As tomo said if you can turn it into a kennel for her then even better.

I'm guessing it'll stop once she's working, as the van will mean hunting, then she'll be too knackered to worry about it on the way back!!

Which van did you go for in the end? I seem to remember you were looking at the Doblo or a crewcab Transit?

All the best

Bullmastiff I bought a transit t260,low roof. The crew cabs I found out were 1800 euros to get cleared by the customs.kenneling her in the van is a non starter as its parked out the front of the house. She also I might add is a very poor eater and is not in anyway excited by food so much so that I have to lock her away from the other dogs to feed her.Any distraction, even visually seeing another dog in the vicinity is reason enough for her not to eat.i boil rabbit and chicken for her alone as she wont eat the tripe or any type of dog nuts, ive tried her on raw rabbit, chicken, sheep heads, throttles, even good quality minced beef doesnt entice her to eat.Shes bloody hard work I have to say.I vary the locations i trot her on,one spot is an abandoned tarmac road,3 different forestrys. If I bring her up the sports fields and let her go she returns 1st call no problem.wothout the van she as obedient as any steady dog.Theres no hassle puting a lead on the dog befre i return to the van but if im biking then its impossible to cycle and hold the dog at the same time. The bitch is 9 months old now so Im not going to overdo the exercise with her,im doing about 4 miles a night fast walking with a few trots and a gallop thrown in for good measure, thats 3 -4 nights a week,I take her road walking locally also. But I let her at home 2 nights a week also.I never raise my voice to her or get phsyical in any way.Ive been keeping lurchers for 32 years and this lady has me god damn stummped  Ive never had this problem before so am at a loss as to how to sort it.thanks for your help people.lurchergirl if you think the book would be a help i would definitely take a read of it and return it post haste in the cindition i recieved it.

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble, top and bottom of it is she wants to do more rather going back home from what you say . But at the same time you can let her dictate terms to you so meet in the middle. You do more with her giving her what she is craving but she must toe the line.

Personally I'd boss her into the van it's fine line between being firm enough to get message through and palling up with the instant she does as you ask. When I boss mine they come running straight to me to try to a appease me this what you are looking for IMO if you are overly harsh they will avoid you. Make it clear cut let them know when you are not happy and when you are, keep it simple.

Maybe get her in the van and take her to another place before going home IE a split walk/hunt one place then back to the van then to another place for another walk/hunt.

I've just had this problem with my five and a half month old pup, now I take a bowl and put it in the back of the van, pour water from a bottle so she can hear it, like a mini water fall and she's in, this works 99% of the time, but she's getting there now, the worst thing I did was shout at her, think that made the problem a little worse, I just think she's up her self about getting into a beat up escort van, or I need a new exaust :D

I've had this problem with all my lurchers which have a fair amount of Saluki in them: they just don't want to go home and want to carry on hunting.

Reem, my current very Saluki lurcher was the worst of all, and I still put him on the lead a 100 yards before we get back to the van: 9/10 the van is parked near some woods which are lifting with game which we can't go into, and Reem knows full well that if he gets in there then I'm stuffed LOL!!

He is now almost 2 years old and never buggers off during a mooch round any more, but I still don't trust him as we get back to the van if we're near those woods, and I still have to slap him on the bum (not hard) to get hiim to jump into the van: the same van he flies into with a huge leap when we're setting out.

Like Meerihunter says it is a VERY fine line with these sort of dogs, and mine isn't even pure Saluki, though I think he might as well be from his behaviour. The one thing Reem has going for him is that he isn't a dominant sort, and likes being with the other dogs too:::::but it's taken nearly 2 years of sweat and tears (mine!) to get to this stage.

Patience and more patience with these dogs: and not everyone is cut out to put up with them: you have to treat them more like cats than dogs IMO.

At 9 months old I would have thought too much exercise would not be good for bone developement etc.I give her roughly 5 miles at a fast walk with runs in between. You lot reckon she needs a bit more to get her jumping into the van?I'll try it to see if it works but id be a bit concerned about spoiling her phsycially.

Jigsaw, its a fecker but it sounds like the animal is wrong in the head and once you fall out with a dog in your mind its never the same........I hope it comes right but I have this niggly feeling you may be saying "Why did I bother?" in 2 years time pal.

I think you know what comes next.............

wilf i'llgive her 1 good season and then if she not up to it i'll do whats necesary,i'll give her a fair crack of the whip first though.a bit of lamping and ferreting and a hare or three, and see where we go from there.there are two things that are issues really, shes avery bad eater and the van crap.I hope thats all that will reveal itself in the future.

Sorry Jigsaw: I didn't see your bit about her not eating. That is not good: I hate picky eaters: is she thin or does she just not need a lot to eat? One of my best bitches ate next to nothing unless she had worked very hard: a full day coursing on the fens, but never looked sick or sorry.

Could you not take your bitch out ferreting? IMO these dogs need stimulation and hunting from very early on: you can't treat and train them like other dogs: too much restraint and they are unhappy: they mentally and physically need to do a lot more than many other types of dog.

Do you have a lot of rabbits round your way: has she ever tried to hunt and you have stopped her?

No matter what the risks to young dogs I always take them nearly everywhere with me and the adult dogs: of course they go on the lead if there is a problem situation or they are likely to do too much, but they are hunting from early on and they see a lot of game early: it is what they live for. Ferreting gets them out and about without quite the same level of danger as running with the pack and going too fast, and gets them focussed on you as well, you being the provider of all good things in the dog's eyes.

skycat,i have to feed her seperately from the others or she'd never eat.If i dont do this she gets very thin.I havent been ferreting much as the season hasnt started yet and the cover is high or too dense.I am trying to give the kelpie a lot of work this season also and im thinking the saluki would be beaten to the punch each time shes out by her so i think i need to give her lots of one on one running.I have no problem sliping her on a lead a long way back from the van but I find it very irritating I should have to do this each time im out. When she starts getting work all this may change and fade away which i hope will happen.she sometimes becomes a little thin weight wise so I do have to keep an eye on her.The terrier pup is always stealing her food becaue she wont eat with other dogs present.I thought she may become protective if i let another dog about her when food is produced.I havent really done any hunting yet with her,she has picked up 2 small rabbits one day and retrieved them back but that was when she was 6 months old.Anyway time will reveal all I suppose and I live in hope. Thanks again for your thoughts and help.

I don't agree that she is wrong in the head, they are just very different dogs to typical western descent lurcher's in their mind set.

Try to deal with issues the instant they arise, don't allow yourself to get frustrated over period and 'loose it' with her better to be sharp with her in an instance and be able to turn it off just as quick and pal up again just as quickly. Stick at it and get her working and I guarantee she will come good plenty of work is the key with both issues coupled with a little more discipline IMO.

Try not to fuss over the eating issues if she does not eat when the opportunity is presented to her lift she had her chance. What are you feeding?

Hope I'm coming across ok with this as I am crap at putting thoughs into writing.

finding or do you mean feeding?Mark if I dont get her eating every day shed starve to death and thats the truth.ive let her hungry for two days, lifting her food when she hasnt eaten, made no difference.Plus i like to see a pup with good weight. At this time of their lives I think its vital they get good quality food for their future efforts.I have never smacked her or shouted at her but I do show her she must go where and when I tell her to.Shes very obedient other than around the van, goes straight into her kennel when told and stays close to me when out,its just this issue with the van i find annoying.i can accept having to tieing her up before I reach it and its not the end o the world so I'll persevere and see how she goes in the season.i hope her eating habits sort themselves out too in time.

 That should of been feeding not finding, lol.

I understand your conserns about her going without at this age, which is why I was asking what you are feeding something like chicken carcass or lamb breast would give the most from little quantity.
