jigsaw 11,875
Some might remember,a few months ago I had a slight problem geting the saluki back to the car,she just doesnt like travelling in the boot I thought. So after I bought the van I thought it wouldnt be an issue.I had the same problem with the trailer.Yesterday I had her out the forestry joging along side the bike with the kelpie and the bull terrier. As we came within 50 yards of the van she stoped and refused to come back.I decided to put away the other 2 dogs first and then sort her out.The little shit would not come to me and to be truthfull I left my young lad sort it out as I was fairly sick of this by now.Ive had 5 months of this now.Ive tried givin her treats when she gets back to the van, praised her but nothing works so anyone has any suggestions on how to overcome this i would appreciate it.I have never given her reason to have a bad experience with travelling so I just cant see why its like this.Shes roughly 8 months old now and by Christmass she'll be running the game.I am a reasonabbly patient man but I am fairly fed up with this carry on.Not once has she returned to the car/van after a walk.I tell you this she better be a decent running dog or by hell she wont have to worry about returning to the van....period.She is the only dog i own that has issues like this.Wouldnt ye think when she sees all the other dogs jumping in and out no problem she would follow suit, bloody annoying .I know someone will just say slip alead and collar over her head long before I get to the van but I really cant understand why shes like this.OPINIONS PLEASE. In the last line of your post, you`ve answerd your own Question.... I think that somthing that started off as a problem for the dog,has now got you wound up and the dog is picking up on your anger... perhaps try feeding the dog in the van, so that that is the only place it gets to eat... Sighthound 49
Yes welcome to the world of the Saluki. I had a dog like this years ago I stopped it by calling her during the walk, giving her a bit of cheese, putting her on the lead for a few minutes then letting her off, repeating this several times, until when I wanted to go home I called her in and walked her to the van on the lead, I had to call her before she saw the van though Also if your taking the dogs out to the same place they know when the end of the walk is coming, I found that by walking new places she did not know when the end of the walk was and therefore came in quick to the lead. ATB Just what I was going to say. Recall her several times during exercise, put her on lead, let her off again etc etc. Also Mars has a good idea, feed her in there and make the van a 'happy place' If you're going to drive off on her just do it somewhere safe ... that might help her get the message as well. I don't have this problem with my dogs, 'cause I don't drive But I do always make a point of putting them on and off lead when we're out so they don't equate the lead with the end of the fun. .... there's a book out called Walkie Ollie, about a guy with a rescue Saluki pup. It's a true account of his trials and tribulations. The dog was a pet, mind you, but the trouble this fella had with the dog - it's hillarious and mind boggling at the same time. And his did the same thing, not getting back in the car for love nor money. I have a copy - will post it to you if you want Quote Link to post
bird 9,946
lurchers can do your feckin head in , colliexs can be twats. But as you say if the dog does the buiness in the field, that the main thing. I KNOW IT FECKIN HARD, but mate you have got switch [off] when the dog plays up, because if you dont its no good for both of you. You can nice dog, temp and nice to be around, but [really] its what they do have to be good worker 1st, pet 2nd. And if it is a good worker [chill out.] Quote Link to post
RichyWales 0
How old is she? I was told that their inner ear doesn't develop properly until about 1year old or just after which is why they throw up so much travelling when they're pups. Maybe travellings really unpleasant for her? You know where your parked so have you tried getting her back on the lead before shes in sight of the van? My dogs would recall perfectly right until they knew they were going back in the car, then they would resist and be right little buggers so I'd leash em before they saw the car and didn't have a problem. TOMO 26,435
i would use the van as her kennel from now on , let her sleep in there , feed water , ect. then if your garden is secure after that let her have the run of the garden and leave the van doors open, so she can come and go as she pleases. but to start with kennel her there, im asuming theres a dog gaurd up so she cant chew in the front Quote Link to post
mikeyboy 7
good advice feeding her in there also take her in there during the day make the van a happy place give her some fuss in there. my dog hated going in the truck eventually he just clicked that was when the fun was going to come when got in the van and he went out. i no its a shitter you just got to stick at it atb mike Quote Link to post

I didn't mean just treats, swamp rat.... I meant that the van is the only place it can eat, i.e. meal times put it`s food in the van, until the dog associates the van with food, "good things" until the dog sees it as normal to get in the van...
