droid 11
Sit down. Lay the ferret on your knees, on its' back. Squirt of veg oil on belly (the ferrets', not yours.... ) Ferret will lick the oil off its' belly, and you can clip away. Quote Link to post
JoeD 24
If you have someone else to help you, let them hold the ferret and you have 2 hands which make it easier. JoeD Quote Link to post
col g 0
yes they can be clipped with a normal pair of nail clippers BUT be careful when doing it as ferrets have blood vessels in their nails.if they are cut too short it can cause bleeding and get infected.if youre unsure see a vet or someone who has been around ferrets for a good while and has the knowledge to cut them safely Quote Link to post

I have 2 polecat kits and wondered If you do or not .....Thanks....Sparko Thanks for the replies, they are only 10-11 weeks old but already have long nails, and wondered If It was too soon to clip them......I havent kept polecats for 20 plus years, and never clipped them then.......Is this something that should be done on a regular basis?.....When the children were young and kept rabbits we had to do them every 6 weeks.....Sparko Quote Link to post

I have even heard of people putting cat scratching posts in for ferrets. Other than that do them when they get too long is the only answer. I have only had to do mine once. JoeD Quote Link to post
stubby 175
BUT be careful when doing it as ferrets have blood vessels in their nails.if they are cut too short it can cause bleeding and get infected. keep WET bar of soap next to you, if you happen to cut to low and it bleeds, push the bleeding nail into the soap, stops the bleeding and seals the nail Quote Link to post

reddog70 236
a way i find good is to scruff the ferrets neck (as mother would do in nature) this makes the ferret still you can take its body wait on your knee if you so wish then proceed to cut nails with your free hand no strugling and quick hence less stress for the ferret all the best Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
I've only ever cut the front ones , and only if they really need it , the back feet seem to wear down on there own Quote Link to post
brogan12345 0
get some one else to hold the ferret is the easyest way mate and cut here watch you dont cut there vain. Edited August 21, 2009 by brogan12345 Quote Link to post
paulus 26
if your right handed hold the ferret in your left hand and clip the nails with your right if your holding it properly the ferret aint going to do nowt. if you look at the nail and its only the front ones that mainly need doing you will see the pink quick just clip below that. its as simple or as hard as you want to make it really. lurcher lass 9
hiya, have just come in from clipping mine!! i have two hobs a jill and three kits,, the critters are fed egg and milk mix every two days or so, if i see the nails are due clipping i make the ferrets wait for their egg mix, say three days if hot four days if cool whether, all the ferrets are dead keen for their egg by the time i let them have it, sit the ferret on huntch roof next to food bowl, while ferret is lapping away i just clip, simple,,,one or two of the kits are a bit wriggly when it comes to holding the back legs so i pick the ferret up, go to pop her on the surface again but pop me thumg under her foot, sit the rest of the ferret on foof, it starts lapping again and i already have the foot raised and toes spread apart,,, hope this helps mate, i used to get someone to hold it but learnt this trick recently!! all the best lurcher lass xxx Quote Link to post
The one 8,511
during the summer i just get my son to hold them and i clip them but i wouldn't be thinking about clipping them any later than this as they will be starting working soon and wearing them down themselves and they use them on any rabbits stuck in a dead end Quote Link to post
