Beastmaster1980 40
I am looking for a terrier to join my team, Harris Hawk & 2 Gill Ferrets but am not sure what to go for really. I went to a Game fair last year and saw the PTA showing their Plummers and they had some cracking looking dogs and spoke to a few owners who said they were good rabbiting & ratting dogs also i really like the build and coat of the Plummer. I also like Jack Russels and was wondering what a Plummer can do that a Jack cant (And dont say fix your sink haha) and do you think the price tag of a Plummer £250 to £400 reflects its ability compared to a Jack Russel costing alot less. Also was keen to hear about Patterdale's, most of the stories ive heard they are used for digging foxes is this correct? I was out a couple of seasons ago with the hawk and a man came over for a chat with a very small Patterdale bitch which was flushing out rabbits left, right & centre for the hawk, it was a great little dog, it had lots of little crinkles in its head between the ears, white patch on chest and looked quite staffy but obviously alot smaller, probably about 12" to shoulders. I have access to an ESS and Cocker for retrieving but was wondering do terriers retrieve and what they are like to train. I Would be gratefull for any of your opinions on what your prefer, hopefully it will help me decide what to go for. Cheers Rich Quote Link to post

Cheers Rich Hi mate, personally at the prices you quote for a plummer I'd be wanting 2 dogs! You won't go wrong with a decent bred russell or any working strain terrier, bushings in their nature. That said if you got an ess or cocker for flushing why dyou need a terrier? you won't get better than them. Quote Link to post
craigyboy 1,274
if its for flushing to the hawk,id recommend a brittany, you could get 1 for the price them plummers are fetching and for bushing imo theres nowt better, put it this way 2 plummers working together wouldnt work as much cover as 1 brittany, the 1 i own works brilliantly with all raptors Quote Link to post
upperlane2 4
what kind of ess u using there a flushing dog personally i think u would be better with a good pointer bred dog give ur bird a chance terriers a bit harder 2 hold back . i have a russell flushing and retrieving but very hard to hold back Quote Link to post
Running 7
why not a staff ? or am i just baised they are great for bushing/flushing game etc Quote Link to post
mushroom 12,938
why not a staff ? or am i just baised they are great for bushing/flushing game etc I agree staffs are underestimated in the field. I would not trade my bitch for £20 million and that is fact, Yes I would love the ready cash but she is mine Quote Link to post
barks 0
if you have a birds mate. then plummer are a more chilled out dog and you can trust them more round you birds. i have a lakeland and it cant be trusted. it was ok but 1 day it will snap. same with the patterdales. there more a dig dogs. i have 2 plummer terrier and thay never bother with the birds. i know plummer are pricey but have good nose and work all day long. so its plummers from me mate if your not going to dig. every man diffrent. tlb getting a dog matey. let use know what you get. thanks barks Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
never worked plummer( or seen them work) but the russels are crackers, good bushing dog and good for retrieving only limited by there size. they have the drive and energy you need and a bosting character. my freinds who work hawks use a teckel and hungarian viszla. don't want to piss on anybodys proverbial camp fire but its a parson for me! good luck with the dog and bird team mate. Cleanspade 3,322
i wouldnt consider a terrier as the most suitable dog for the job you have in mind. i would have thought a cocker or brittany allso. Quote Link to post
jenksi87 3
russel or a patterdale mate. you wont go far wrong with either. why would you want the dog to retrieve though? i f your working with hawks you definately dont want a terrier steaming up to it to take its catch or it will be bye bye dog Quote Link to post
