semi auto choice

Recommended Posts

Im looking for a semi auto 12 bore multi choke and am tempted tempted by the hatsan but would like a few views on a couple of other options that ive not heard so many opinions on the remmington 1100 / 1187, the winchester 1400 / 1500, the baikal as second hand options, i have them all in a reasonable traveling distance from me. I know some will say stay clear of the hatsan but am just looking for info on the above guns.

Thanks

i am not an expert on semi autos, I would like to buy one too. Hatsans very attractive from cost point of view but I would probably go for webley & Scott, they been around many years and life time warranty.

The webley and scott are made under licence in turkey I believe and are not of the same standard as the old webley and scott's, I have heard bad reports on them so I personally would steer clear. It is a similar case with the escorts which seem to be hit and miss some people have had no problems with them while others have had nothing but problems with theirs. You may get a good one you may not. I personally would go for a seconhand benelli or beretta if you can stretch the funds, for around £400 - £600 you would get a good reliable gun that should last many trouble free years.

The Hatsan, and the Webley and Scott are both made in Turkey, probably in the same factory. Webley and Scott have not made shotguns in this country since 1979. As has been suggested, I would buy a second-hand Beretta or similar, you will get a reasonable one for the same price.

thanks for the replys so far, does anyone have any experiance of the baikals and winchesters please. all the models i have mentioned are available to me for my max budget of just over £3oo, so im sure there is better out there but i simply cant afford them hence the specific guns asked about.

cheers

Hi Adam.....I think for the money you cant really go wrong with the hatsan ....I bought mines about 2weeks ago (3inch gun) i had a good day at the pigeons with it a couple of days ago firing just over 100 shells with no probs .....sure you can save yer money and buy a beretta or a bennelli new or secondhand but for the money you are gettin a new gun with a 3 yr warranty so if anything does go wrong just take it back to the dealer....when i bought mine there was a beretta al391 with the synthetic stock , it was secondhand and the dealer was wantin £900 if i remember correctly ...sure i would like one but it just aint gonna happen.....once again it will come down to your circumstances if it suits you then why not ....it doesnt always mean you have to buy the best to buy a gun which will serve the same purpose......Davy

Okay I know some of you are going to bang your heads against the wall but i returned home with the Escort, I have listened to your opinnions, not only on this thread but others and other forums too, and i also know a couple of lads that have owned them, I have tried to take a balanced view of everyones opinnion and would like to thank you all for your input especially niloticus1 who went out of his way to be helpful.

The main reason s for my decision are the warranty (I can here some of you now muttering I'll be using it :censored:;) ) but most importantly the gun seemed to just drop into my shoulder, nobody can dispute thats the right reason to pick a shotgun, the advertising men would call it synergy, probably more like a bit of luck really.

Its true if I had had more coffers in the pot I may have wound up with something else but the simple fact is that i was already streching the limited budget and from the guns i tried it was the best fit with a couple of the stock spacers in place.

Did I make a good decision? only time will tell once I have had chance to form an experienced opinnion be it good or bad I will let you know.

Thanks again for your time.

Youve made a good one mate :clapper: . Ive had my escort for 2 years now an never had a problem, jammed maybe 2 or 3 times, if u keep it oiled and clean u should be fine. The way a see it if u buy a berreta or some other top class gun your always worried about scratches in that, with this your still to be carfull but your not scared to roll about ditches an that. Should get a good crack at ducks in 2 weeks though. HAPPY HUNTING :clapper:

I wouldnt spend my money on anything other than benelli, personal opinion obviously. Can be cleaned in 5 minutes, unlike any other semi auto on the market, practically indestructible. Maybe not essential if you only take your guns out the cabinet once in a blue moon, but if like me you use it nearly every day and can put a case of shells through it at the rabbits, its a great tool.

The Hatsan is a Winchester copy, and a good one at that, a friend of mine bought one last year and he has had good service from it, good value and a decent piece of kit as far as I can see.

I have an old but very good 26" Berretta 303 multichoke, I paid £350 for it in Coventry about 7 years ago, it's never let me down, I've fired 1,000's of shells through it and I've never had a miss-fire or failed re-load, and that's everything from 3" Magnums down to 28gr 'girly' clay loads, so I would recommend the 303 or it's siblings as THE semi out there, they were very popular so there are hundreds of them in the system and it's fairly easy to find a good one, maybe you can trade up to one in the future?
