English Pointers in the USA

Recommended Posts

I have been looking at some pics of what the Americans call English Pointers, but they are obviously a different dog to our native pointers, they have more bone and have a vertically carried tail, i am not saying they are any better or any worse, they are just different, why ?.

Have they got some other breeding in there or are they just a different strain, either way they are a handsome dog, as are ours but i just wondered about the differences.

Any information welcome.

Dave.

Hello Dave C. I'm not a pointer guy. But I talk to a few. They seem very concerned with tail carriage. It seems like a minor thing to me but they like it so... Also, there seems to be two types around these days. The leggier one which I think you refer to when you speak of bone. (length of bone?) Then the shorter bulkier type closer to what your used to seeing. I prefer this look.

By the way, we just call them Pointers. Generally considered the best at their trade.

Thanks for the reply Mickey, i didnt think i was going to get any :wallbash:

I have seen them referred to as EP which i took as English Pointer, if they are a different breed to ours my apology.

If they are the same breed, and i dont want to offend anyone, have they possibly got a bit of GSP in there, which makes the tail vertical.

Thanks again.

Dave.

Dave, we call them pointers because the other dogs, gsp, gwp, etc. are actually versatiles. Pointers (English) are true specialists. Some types or lines I've heard of are AA, Elhew, Miller, Miller infused Elhew. NSTRA bred, shooting bred. Any way. They are still (English) pointers. Very athletic, great noses and staunch pointers. As far as out crossing with GSPs. I don't know, but I do know that over here. People are diehard purebreeders.

Thats really all I know about them. Here's a forum link. If you go visit here. There is bound to be someone who can answer your questions.

just to clarify, there is no such thing as an english pointer, just the pointer.

they started to be called english pointers to destinguish them from the german types when they began to appear in britain.
