coldweld 65
So, this is prompted as I have often seen people who seemingly have problems lamping solo. Or, not even solo but they appear to have problems using both a gun and lamp by themselves (sounds bad but no offense intended!). What I want to know - whether you go out on your own or with the rest of the village - is how do you use your lamp? For example, whether I'm solo or with a buddy, for most of the night I will hold my scope mounted lamp in my hand. I will use it as a hand held lamp, shining it around to look for eyes. I will only attach it to the rifle when I'm in a shooting position OR if I need to look at something far away. I've heard of folks who seem to have their lamp attached to their rifle 100% of the time and however my brain works I just don't understand this? So let's hear about it, how do you lamp yours? Lazy but safe the only time a rifle is pointed at anything it has been ID'ed by the lamp man. Swinging a lamp around on a rifle is something i disagree with. Quote Link to post
v-max 2
I use my 4x4 to cover the ground & pending how i read the fox i either go out on foot with back-pack or will shoot fae the motor. Some bits i park up at farm & walk it varys for me. I work the clusion vehicle mount very good IMHO but with a few teething probs but good for the money & i really do need to get a scope mount lamp etc for when i walk & on my own as its not easy DIYing it. hiho 5
4x4 but if im by myself i take a quad Quote Link to post
dixyhmr 62
I tend to hold lamp in left hand, and rest rifle on forearm holding the rifle right handed. I must admit its difficult when trying to shoot over longer ranges. Im going to invest in a scope mounted lamp in thr future, and il se how I get on with it. Quote Link to post
bobndog 0
Drive with left hand, lamp with right hand, rifle on dash. Spot fox, out onto bonnet, drop bipod, lamp in left hand, rifle in right hand, bang! Or when using NV, use lamp to find fox, drop bipod, onto bonnet, bang! As the meercat says; Simples! Lazy but safe the only time a rifle is pointed at anything it has been ID'ed by the lamp man. Swinging a lamp around on a rifle is something i disagree with. The basis of what you say is obviously correct but are you therefore saying NO lamp man, then NO shooting?? And walking around the countryside at night with more than one can create too much distraction/noise/smell, etc! This is an area of potentially large debate, I struggle to understand the safety angle of many who lamp themselves with a hand held lamp and then shoot as well, seems like some balancing act to me, and potentially dangerous of course....could just be me though as I never could multitask that well. Lone shooting.... then a gun mounted lamp is the best answer to me, but does of course also have safety implications. So is the answer Nightvision....I think not for most... ..try avoiding the brambles, thistles, stingers, branches, barbed wire, tree stumps, potholes, tractor tracks, etc, etc when walking through the country at night with a brilliant nightvision scope on your gun...unless you spend a fortune on a scope AND headset of course!!! coldweld 65
Decker For me it is no lamp man no shooting ! I was told only point a rifle at something you intend to kill. So the idea of swinging a loaded rifle with a lamp on top looking for a target fills me with dread. But we are all different and each to their own. Quote Link to post
East coast 2
When out i'm usually with a mate who shoots and i lamp and squeak the foxes. I know where best to position the motor for my mate to get a rest off the bonnet. Got a good set up and it works and safe. Quote Link to post
SUNDAYBAIN 19
IM usually out by myself so scope mounted lamp is a must for me i use one of those cheater slings which takes the weight of rifle and lamp , my lamp is always on rifle and dont have any problems ,also on the safety side i never put one up the spout till iv spotted charlie ,if i had the choice i would have a lampman with me. Totally agree with the old doctrine.... but tell that to the army......and.... ... unloading a Rimfire or Cf to have a glance around is hardly rocket science!!! Or indeed, NOT loading it until target acquired!! Quote Link to post
