loulove1 0
Me and my brother went out for a couple of hours on sunday, this is the first time I have ever been out so early in the year. Normally i am waiting for the first frost but decided to give it a go for a couple of reasons. The 1st was that i have just been given some new permission on land that is over run with rabbits and the farmer seemed keen for us to make an apperance, i didnt want him to give the permission to someone else or call in pest controllers. And 2nd that the sets are in the open and when i walked the land during the week i hadnt seen any starters out feeding. We started on a one hole set that I had seen a rabbit run down as we arrived. Stuck a net down and put ferret down the hole, as soon as she went in we could here the thunder down below as the ferret chased the rabbits round and round for about 10mins. Then the rabbit stuck his head out and felt the net with his nose, turned round to run back down the warren but got his leg caught in the net. I quickly grabbed the net and dragged him out as the ferret then appeared, one in the bag. Decided to move on after five more minute although we knew there were more rabbits somewhere down the set (one for next time). We moved on to a big open set after talking to a farm worker who said that the top of the field had around 200 rabbits in it the night before. We decided to work a big open set with around 70 holes along a bank. We only had 40 nets with us so done our best with netting up. We put both jills down as we were treating this as more of a training exercise for the ferrets, a chance get them used to being out again before we start up the season properly. The girls were a little green to start off with but the instincts kicked in after ten minutes of going in and out of holes and then they were down for a while. The rumbling was once again upon us. These rabbit knew they were in a big set and could give the ferrets the run around but the jills still managed to push around seven out and we netted 3 of them. We had been at it for a couple of hours and decided to give up and have a walk round the permission as it was starting to get hot by then. Some pics of the day..... Can you work out what my brothers t-shirt says ha ha. This one is of my son who did not come out ferreting but is to cool not to include in this post lol.... A good couple of hours out to show the farmer we are keen and give the jills the first taste of the year, no starters but did learn why I prefer the colder months for ferreting. Quote Link to post

loulove1 0
nice white trainers Ha ha I know, we had the rest of the equipment and our boots in the car, 5 minutes away at the bottom of the hill. That is the difference with this time of year, You can get away with t-shirts and trainers and not feel like ya gonna break ya neck or freeze to death lol. You can see why we wanted to get out and give it a go so bad and to let the farmer know we mean buisness , the ground is great and not a bramble in sight. Ferreters Paradise lol........
