first kits

Hi guys ive just purchased my first kits albino and a polecat both 12 weeks old. There coming on great, the polecats a wee bit more nippyer u could say but the bites are getting softer lol. Am just curious the woman i got them of was feeding them dry food with meat every now and then so ive been keeping them on dry food but puting in some rabbit or mince as a wee treat is this ok as i dont want to get there diet muddled up. THANKS

p.s. will get some pics up soon, been busy putting mesh all around garden fence and aquired some 4inch tubing to start burying under ground.

personaly i feed mine meat i.e liver,beef its just a mix that my local butcher makes up for me and puts it threw the mincer and my ferrets love it,but i also have dried j.w.b ferret food on offer to with plenty of water just so as they have a choice to what they want to eat,and i give them rabbit when i come home frm the field also,plz dnt say ya feed do/cat food? its a no no...a.t.b with them and i look forward to seeing the pics soon wouldnt mind seeing your set up you are building for them to mate?

NOT cat food lol. Theres a farm not far from me that sells ferret feed 39%protein content , its £16 for 15kg which isnt to bad. How much meat would u put in on a daily basis would u say. My whole gardens getting turned around to make it good for them, there not getting to run around freely without me being there but im gona try make sure the get a good couple of hours exercise a day.

well mine is all minced up for me so its not like big chunks of meat i feed but i get them in pound bags and cut it up in 4 and it does 4 days like but i also get the big bags of meat from pets at home which is chunks of beef and give them a few chunks every few days but everyone is different which ya will find out as more ppl pst mate,but personally if mine arnt hungry they wont eat theres days i go out and theres enuff food to do them so its hard ta say how much meat to feed them mine arnt gready like some ferrets are,16 quid for a big 15kg bag? dats f****n good lol i use j.w.b and its £8 for 2kg like a 15kg would last me a month lol or more maybe...well your garden sounds a good job cant wait to see the pics

Cheers guys, a will just keep giving them there dry food with some meat as a treat. Would i be able to take them out ferreting this season or best to wait till next and when i say this season i mean around christmas time.

i think kits need meat daily , you will find a huge difference with the nipping if they fill there bellys with daily meat & just top up the dry food, my 4 kits can clean a rabbit over night

 

I am also a little uncomfortable with this trend of depriving an obligate carnivore daily fresh meat , meats not a treat its a neccesety imho but as you were following what the previous owner stipulated regarding diet , but i would give meat daily

i would agree there like i do give meat daily like as its their natural diet so i would say kay is right there about they need meat like good point made

Mine get Go Cat dry kitten food 40% protein (which worked out half the price of ferret food)and meat most days, looking fine on it.

I like to feed my kits just meat if I can, they are what they eat, and they're made of meat, more so if you want them to work this season

I agree about the meat. Mine get any meat I can find, although they always have a bowl of dry food should they want it. I was shooting pigeons the other day and I put some of the ferral stock doves that I'd shot into the cage instead of the usual rabbit. My 2 new kits (both about 12 weeks old) ate everything except the wings, all I did was pull off some of the breast feathers and cut one slice down each breast. Nature does the rest, they sure know how to eat!!

 

I also happen to think that feeding meat stops the nipping - anyone got any idea why?

a do think they need to be eating meat for working like i dont no about anyone else but i have a jill that wont eat meat for some strange reason she picks at it but dont eat a great deal and shes not a great worker shes more of a pet now,but the way i see it if they are on a good meat diet they work better seems to be they no what they are after.
