Haunted Nights

Recommended Posts

Just finished reading a piece in a book called "The Notorious Poacher" By G Bedson. In it he describes certain nights of the year when nature calls a halt to all activity and everything in the countryside goes to sleep. The farmyard dog does not bark, the night birds are silent, even the wild ducks and waterfowl remain still. The silence of the countryside is uncanny.

Long nets can be dropped in what may seem perfect conditions, yet still remain empty. These nights do not happen very often.......but twice.........many years ago, and many years apart, I have experienced such nights. I thought it was just me imagining things, but reading that someone else has witnessed exactly the same phenomenon sent a shiver down my spine. Both times it happened when we were long-netting somewhere we hadn't permission to be........and i can vividly recall saying to my netting partner.........this seems really spooky and unnerving.

I just wondered if anyone else has ever experienced such a strange happening.

Can't say I've experienced that here but back home, a few times up by the lakes in Northern Ontario, I did feel that same sort of eerie, silent, unexplained stillness.

I love it :D

Ace picture, by the way.

yes mate know exactly what you mean but im sure its to do with the place aswell as the day!

many years ago i worked as second gardener on an estate which was built in the middle of an ancient iron age fort. every morning throuhout late spring summer and autumn id have to get up real early to tend the greenhouses and flower tubs befor the family woke from the house and it got too hot.one morning i got up left the house with the dogs and walked across the fields toward the grounds it was deadly silent as if it was a christmas day sunday morning. no crowing cock no barking dogs no birds no rabbits no wind it was like everything had died. my hair was standing on right on end even the dogs were at my feet which is strange in itself by the time i had walked to the estate grounds i was that freaked out i just had to walk[run] back and fuk the watering off. later that day i got a real bolloking off the head gardener until i explained why and he told me he had had exactly the same experience a couple of times before in the same place. im not a person thats scared of much but that was a very very strange morning

Glad i'm not the only one then............yes you are dead right........like Christmas day and a Sunday combined and not a sound from anywhere............one of natures many mysteries i suppose........but it is amazing when you experience it.

I can remember being out one night with a good pal of mine doing a spot of poaching with the dogs the night was so still and damp not the best of nights i will edmit. We walked up this cale field and to the top of this field there is one of those like metal windmill bird scarers now remember theres no wind what so ever just as we got by this scarer the biggest gust of wind came up the field and this scarer spun round and it was as if it was looking at me we feckin shit our selves and i aint been there since ive never ever known anything like that in my whole life

Can't say i've had exactly the same thing.

Closest was walking back from the pub with my mate (a bit better for being on the right side of a few ciders). It was only when I stopped for a pee before crossing the road to my house, that my mate pointed out that we hadn't seen a single rabbit nor heard a single bird, animal or anything. Walked the route no end of times always see/hear something.

The other time was about 45secs before the total eclipse. I was in devon on my cousins farm. Every thing went silent for a few seconds then the geese and ducks went beserk coz they were caught o/s their hutch in the dark. But for half a minute it was quite weird. Got goose bumps and everything.

Will have to read the book you mentioned. Ta

im not sure whether i have or not but i have been up on my permission with the gun, when there was no sound, and when you have to walk past the farmhouse, and usually the dogs are barking nothing,

i dont know whether or not this was the same type of occurrence, but it was damn freeky
