skycat 6,173
I do it ferreting first as all my dogs need to be able to do both. If you start lamping first then the chances are, but not always as a lot depends on the breeding and temperament of the dog, then its likely to get bored hanging around ferreting if its already had a taste of immediate action on the lamp. Having said that there are some dogs which can turn their hand to anything no matter which one you enter them to first. But I stand by what I said inasmuch that ferreting teaches them patience and steadiness, plus they are learning to catch bolters, which are generally easier than a rabbit running for home, especially at night. Its a lot easier for a young dog to learn how to catch in the day than at night anyway: but different people do things in different ways and there's never just one way to do something.
