Big Vermin Problem

Recommended Posts

Over the last couple of weeks we have been losing lambs to what we have taken to be dogs the attacks take place at night and by first light the body had been got at probably local brocks and foxes it has been hard to tell what spersific injury caused the death untill yesterday not a lamb this time a big full grown stroppy tup (who chases the sheep dogs if hes that way out) still warm with what looks like one large bite wound on his throught which has removed everything down to the cerable vertabray. It might be a bit far fetched but could this be a big cat? if so will I need somthing bigger than .243?

Thanks Mark

Unfortunatly the knackerman came and cleared our dead shed this afternoon so no photos sorry but a rough discription the tup was a texal waighed around twenty stone his neck about 28" when found on the edge of a small wood lots of marsh grass which was well flattened and drag marks around10' long at the begining of the drag marks a fair amount of splash marks possibly blood besides the neck wound which extended right across the throught a large amount of flesh was missing including the epiglotus and around 2 to 3" of both the carotid artery and the vain two shallow scratch marks on the shoulder were just visible hope this helps

Mark (hunting north yorkshires big cat or maybe not)

Not suggesting for one moment that what you have described is not anything to do with a big cat. But there is a growing trend within the lurcher brigade to get pit into their dogs and perhaps we can guess why this is becoming a requirement.

The classic signs of a cat attack are usually severe claw marks down the sides of the victim - dogs do not have that type of claw and therefore rely on their jaws to tear flesh. A cat uses its jaws to suffocate and my feeling is that had it been a cat it would have certainly disemboweled the tup and not caused the damage you have seen to the tup's neck..

Not sure what's doing it, but a well placed 243 will stop them I should think.

I agree 243 will stop what ever is doing it.BUT. dont your need this varifieing on your FAC ticket.

ON mine ive had to have stated that 243 and 308 are for fox and deer only.

What would the old bill say should a big cat be shot???

In principle I understand they will not say anything now...as long as you have deer on the FAC you can now shoot whatever you want...got too complicated for the forces to list/define all the species and also a bit silly when you had graduated to the deer level, so ACPO now say doesn't matter what your FAC says as long as DEER listed..go for it...if it's safe of course!

If I haven't got this totally right perhaps someone would specify the ruling more accurately!

Cheers

It doesnt matter what gun you use on these creatures ,so long as you have a silver bullet, then you will find it suitable for other animals of this type, ie, werewolves ,unicorns, mermaids, yetis, nessies ,and dragons up to nine ton.
