After a dig of any considerable length you should give the dog fluids, from a bowl or large syringe into their mouth. an isotonic drink is ideal. It's about there first thing you should do.

keeping a dog fully hydrated after a long dig will reduce their heart rate and blood pressure to normal levels quickly, as well as stopping any bleeding more quickly.

where a dog has incomplete lip seal or damage to their lips/chin they are more inclined to lose fluids and salts, and can quickly become dehyrated easily.
