to much choc is well bad for a dog, but id give mine half a mars, after hard graft, and before a egg white and glucose. it works. dont want to much grub , at all before, and the day before hunting feed at twelve, give them time to digest, how would you feel about scraping on a full gut you,d be chuking and have no life about you, they need something in them, but not alot.

i always feed my dogs the night before a days work, they need energy in their body to do the work we expect off them IMO, they are fed about 12 hours or more before they are worked so i cant see how they could get cramp. i cant see the benifit of starving a dog the day before working them. it just doesnt add up to me

 

spot on mate - for a dog to have to do a hard days graft on an empty stomach sounds daft to me too. A human athlete will spew his ring if he eats anything up to 2 hours before hand depending on type of exercise and the type of food (saw a lad throw a pot noodle up he scoffed half an hour before doing a round on the focus mitts) so a good feed the night before, nothing on the day until the work is done then he eats like a king.

They seem lasy if you feed on the day of the hunt if I am doing a couple of spots on the day a bit of chocolate keeps there energy up

chocolate is toxic to dogs

what a load of testicles.i work mine 2-4 days a wk.if i fed them more each days theyde be bloaters.not sure to find each time.just feed and condition your terrier/any dog as usual.should they get hard graft then you can put heat to them or bump up their food etc..

i have never fed a dog the night before a dig, a dog thats fed correct all week and exercised, will have build up enought inside fat to work all day, wild animals hunt best on empty stomachs, there sharper and more alert, and will breath better, so do dogs.....chocolate to dogs......never heard so much shit talk in all my life.

i have only made sure that the dogs are not fed before work,the day before as normal and a couple of hours in front of the fire before food is given. abit of oil on it and maybe an egg yolk( the white are also poisonous a vet once told me,since then i have seperated them).on the point of chocolate:i very seldom give a dog chocolate as its supposed to be bad for them,if it works for some then ok.

plenty of water while working and they have always been fine.

i only feed adult dogs once a day anyway so no real difference for them i guess.

Totally agree.... ive never even considered using glucose or any other stimulant, as wink hound said, a fit healthy dog will cope.

hello lads.might sound like a stupid question but what time ye find is the best to feed a working terrier before a days digging.would ye feed him night before or a small amount the morning of ?? all the best.

feed them the night before mate that way if there traped overnight there not to weak would like to see one of us digging all day with out grub
