tillylamp 1,828
hi every one, i am a newbie to this site, and wanted to pick a few brains! i have a lakeland cross jack russell which is 10 months old now,ive had her for 10 weeks, she has already caught a small rabbit, and i let her play with the rabbits i have shot, my question i have is"how do i start her on rats?...... also on the last two occasions when off the lead she had not come back when called. She was gone for 2 hours, but then came back as if she had done nothing wrong ! She also has a tendancy to go "deaf" when she has her nose to the ground or something has taken her interests. Now...is this normal for this breed of terrier? Anyone any ideas about the recall? many thanks tillylamp Quote Link to post
longdog13 36
Hi, Your dog should take to rats naturally, try and start her off easily, not thrown in a confined space as she will get bitten and this could put her off for a long time , if you know someone who has permission on rats see if you can go along and let your terrier know what it's all about. With regards to the selective deafness, you should have really got this training done at an early age, although terriers by nature are strong willed. your problems should ease with some regular basic training. Best of luck. ps, get your dog chipped if it's not already Edited August 1, 2009 by longdog13 Quote Link to post
tillylamp 1,828
hi longdog 13, thankyou for your advice,i will try to find someone who goes ratting, to see if i can tag along. as regards to the basic training, i bought the dog from a guy at 8 months old, she lived in a very small run with a kennel, she had,had no training what so ever, not even sit, stay, lay down or come hear, and was barely let out of the run at all, like i say,i have only owned for 10 weeks now,and i am doing the basic training, and she has come on leaps and bounds, but it seems to go,1 step forward, and 2 steps back at times, especially the recall. thanks tillylamp. Vosey 24
Hello Tillylamp, I am having the same problem with my 9 month old fell bitch, she was doing really well, but then she discovered hedghogs, rabbits, rat and now fox, now if she gets on a scent she is off there is no coming back I have to go and get her. I can't let her off even in the local park. She does come back when she is with an older terrier. I read somewhere about giving them a break and then starting back from basics.
