Are Quail not Summer migrants ?

Yes they are but they are also kept in captivity for eggs or to clean up spilt food on avairy floors. They are known as Japonese quail but are in fact the same species as the european quail. Because they are so easy to rear I thought I would hatch some and put them in one of the covers, just wondered if any one had tried it.

correct me if im wrong but im sure it is illegal to release them.

we looked into it on the partridge ground a few years ago but the game conservancy told our agent it was not legal to do so plus as they only fly a couple of feet off the ground, its dangerous as a driven shoot.

The Quail thats kept in aviaries tend to be Chinese Painted Quail. It's believed that if you have C.P.Q. in your aviary you wont have mice, LOL. I wish.

Actually looking for some Quail myself for my aviary.

we had a load escap a few years back and they didnt survive the cold and rain. personally i dont think they would a) fly enough to shoot (too low) and B) wouldnt survive in this wet climate.

you can get several spicies of quail verry fast flyers tricky little bliters to shoot, and yes i think its ilegal to release no native spicies into the wild you probly wont hold them in cover crop as soon as most combinable crop is cut they will feck off never to be seen again, you do get wild common quail (europian) around at the moment but will migrate again around the end of aughust.

smart little birds but a lot off effert i think just to loose them in a few weeks only my opinion but a wast of time make a pen a keep them in that
