Recommended Posts

My dads just bought a verry nice red lakey bitch she's 14 months old but the only reason the guy sold her to him was she had been at dig a few weeks before hand and took a bit of a pasting to say the least ! next time he had her out she refused to enter a hole wich was holding so he got rid.... now iv had her out for a walk a couple of times now and took her to an old earth thats near ware i walk my dogs there was nothin in it but she did enter do you guys think if gave her a couple of days at the rats or cubs it might get her confidence up and turn her good or will she be a no hoper ?

IMO that dog is too young to right off... now you have got the dog give it time dont try and enter it straight away, let the dog setlle in and enter it when you think its ready and also dont give it to much...

I bred patt pups a few years back. I gave my mate one and i kept one and gave the others to working homes. All the pups turned out to be good digging dogs except the one i gave my mate. I knew the breeding was there so i offered to take the dog back cos he was getting impatient with the dog (the dog was going on 2.5- 3 yrs at this stage). Anyway to make a long story short, i gave her time and slowly but surely she came round and she was the best dog i ever had. Unfortunately i lost her 2 yrs ago in an awkward sett. So i reckon you should give your dog time and like what DOGGINLAD said, "the dog is still young".

Good luck in the future with the dog mate

Give here time, if she's going to ground, thats one problem solved. The next thing is wait untill foxing season to put her slowly to the quarry, untill that time work here on everything, but no rabbits before the fox!

I hope your lucky and become a hell of a terrier :yahoo:

to much to soon, letting a 14 month dog get smashed on its first outings? obvisouly was'nt ready for it mentally, give her time to mature and you may be pleasently suprised, good luck ricky and keep us posted mate :good:

Im a bit puzzled as to why this guy let this bitch go...he's not the kinda guy to let a bitch like this go easyily he said she refused to enter but as i say she entered no problem when i had out for a walk

personaly i would not let her near an earth for a few months, get her used to her new surroundings & owner, let her mature, she obvisouly knows her job and perhaps she was just a little shaken, as you said she worked an earth for you, may just need time. in the mean time keep her sharp on rats. hope this helps mate :good:

she should have been 18 month before she was even allowed into anything pleny of rats till a year an a half i say! i have never saw a good working lakeland yet if im honest most of the lads i know rely on black dogs.

Yes the black dogs are popular, but when you have the chance to having a good lakie,... take it.

Got pat's for a couple years, had crossbreed lakie's before, and if you ask me, I go for the lakie's, they also have brains, togheter with their skills to kill.

make's them good allrounders, something you cant say about pat's.
