There are many good products on the market available to counter Customers, the best one that can be bought over the counter is the Birchwood Casey blu & rust remover, but to remove the rust from any metal is by hand useing different grades of grit as not to damage address, if there is any rust or pitting & bluing hot or cold is placed over the top it will show through as a ginger colour & carry on rusting, home use cold blu is pretty poor, but if you have a small area to cover it is ok, but it must be preped realy well with bare oil free metal showing. foxon. Phantom 631
Dont know if this will help or even if it would be suitable for use on a gun, but there is a product by Locktight (or is it Locktite or whatever it is they call the company) I used it on my old motorcycle where some rust spots had started. Stoped the rust dead in its tracks. Dont know whether you could blue over it though. May be worth a try? There must be someone more informed than I on this subject (given the collective knowledge of the members who may have some kind of experiance) Someone is bound to have used it?? Depend if you only want to tackle a small area or strip & reblu the entire rifle, wire wool does work on heavy areas, but to reblu is best left to a Gunsmith, it takes many years of trainning to do bluing & blacking, there are so many different bluing finishes plus blending a blu to the original, I have a bluing tank for hot bluing & it can take many attempts to get it right & I have been doing this for over 20 years so I would not recomend this as a DIY. foxon. Phantom That stuff is acid based and turns the rust into a sulphate and a blackish colour. I don't think one can blue over the top of that as it is not clean steel as a base. Then again it could just turn out in funky colours with the sulphate base, who knows. ATB Michael Quote Link to post

John-B 4
sorry to but in here, but how much would it cost to get a full rifle reblued??? Quote Link to post
why jelly 0
once the barrel is rusty you can put any amount of anything you like, you'll still have a rusty barrel. Bin the WD40 for air rifles. If you have a rifle from new and it has no rust and you go out and it gets wet, the worse possible thing to do is let it dry, when you get home wipe it down with a towel/kitchen roll/next door's cat, make sure it is dry and then wipe the whole rifle with an oily rag. I use engine oil, don't get the oil on the optics of the scope!!!! If you have a rifle with a rusty barrel, you can still do the same. As long as it is outside surface rust and not in the bore it will still do exactly the same job for you as it did for the twat who left it neglected in the first place Quote Link to post
