Blacksheep 6
Hi i'm just putting in for my first SGC , i have a slight problem with my flat it's rented i live on the 2nd floor (no concrete floor to bolt cabinet to) ,and the walls are made of thermalite blocks 4" behind plasterboard covering , so the walls are not an option. I have checked in the Police Firearm Regulations and as far as i can see i should be able to lie my cabinet on its back and bolt through the wooden ceiling joists to secure it , has anyone done this and had a problem with the inspection ? My only other option is on the concrete floor of a locking cupboard downstairs , but it is in a hall i share with the other tenant so not sure if that would be allowed ? Quote Link to post

There is no issue with fixing a cabinet to an internal/stud/non load bearing wall! As long as it is fixed securely, and that may mean 5"long coach screws etc etc it will be acceptable. Into thermalite chemical mix bolts are highly effective. Get on with it Quote Link to post
The one 8,530
Lay it on its back and bolt it to the floor Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
Lay it on its back and bolt it to the floor I have friends that have a cabinet bolted on its back, with FAC's so it should be fine for SGC!! Quote Link to post

Get on with it The issue with the wall is not a legal one it is the fact that i rent the place and would have to remove the plaster board to get at the thermalite blocks as there is a 4" gap between them , but if i can just lie it on its back and bolt to the floor through wooden joists and have no wall fixings im sorted Cheers Quote Link to post
CUPCAKE118 0
Just a question but does your land lord know you about to start fixing to joists Quote Link to post
Blacksheep 6
Just a question but does your land lord know you about to start fixing to joists Yes he's ok , he is a SGC holder himself , just don,t want to have to start cutting his plasterboard etc just to get at crap thermalite , when the floor is probably a more secure option anyway. leadpig 0
you dont need to cut the paster board, just use threaded bar with chemi bolts as said a bead of silicone around the cabinet after its fixed really helps as well it acts like a shock absorber Quote Link to post
dave1372 83
Some FLO's are more helpful and realistic than others so give him a ring and mention your options, he is the one you need to get to approve it. When I moved last year to a new build kit house I was worried about my options and they FLO was great he was a realist and was happy for it to be bolted to floor joists in the loft.
