Alycidon 2
To power a say a lamp such as a 170 with a 100 watt bulb current draw will be 8 Amps an Hour (AH). A 7 AH max capacity battery will give usable shooting light for maybe 15 minutes I think. Personally I use a Deben battery pack that consists of 2 x 10AH Batteries linked and in a shoulder pack. This gives me enough light to shot foxes out to 200 yards or so with a centerfire for maybe 30 or 40 minutes use drawing 8AH. A Quote Link to post

I used 7AH battery's for many years, going out for 1-2 hours at a time and rarely ran one flat. I now use the Deben tracer Lithium Ion 10AH pack - its simply superb abd I wouldn't recommend anything else now Quote Link to post
CUPCAKE118 0
you could always go old school and put a car battery in a rucksack Joking Aside motor bike gel bateries might be good and last a good while Quote Link to post

As we only use them for a few seconds at a time then yes you can go out for a hour or two, I was out this week fro a couple of hours and still had a bit of life left but not a lot, that included looking for a fox that I overestimated the distance, I picked him up the following morning with a good chunk of his head missing. My figures are intended to give the guy an idea of the likely output if used continually. Personally I would say that perhaps for an air rifle or rimmy you would get more usable life but foxing no. CUPCAKE118 0
If my calcs are right to run a 100w bulb for 1 hour you need a 8.3 Amp hour battery Watt-Hours= Watt*hours Amp-hours= Watt-hours/operating voltage 100w lamp 12v operating voltage 100*1= 100watt hours 100/12= 8.333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 recurring amp-hours please let me know if i am wrong Quote Link to post
Alycidon 2
Of course you are not wrong, but that is untill the battery is totally discharged. I am talking about having a light level remaining that is usable at 200 yards, that will fail well before the battery is totally flat. For air rifle or rimmy use then shorter distances mean longer time between charges. Totally discharging a battery does not do its life exectancy much good, optimum battery life is obtained by recharging when the battery is pretty low but not totally flat. Topping up a charge after maybe 5 minutes use also does not do them much good. I only use my battery pack in combination with a centerfire and a 170 lamp for fox shooting. Certainly when I was looking for one in some longish grass the other week it did not seem long before I had nothing left at all in the battery. Amazing how you can walk past them at night. Perhaps I need to check the capacity of my batteries but they are only maybe 18 months old, they are though sealed lead, maybe the Lith Ion are the way to go. I can only speak as I have found. Certainly when I was involved selling truck batteries then the Bosch Silver Calcuim battery were very much a premium product but of course had a premium price as well. They easily stood constant 24 hour 7 day a week charging on fire engines, the only time those batteries are not on charge is when the tender is out. A Quote Link to post
Alycidon 2
I had an issue with a lampforce lamp last night and while looking for a spare switch came accross this; http://www.lightforce.net.au/LFSPORTCAT_JAN2008_email.pdf page 18. says a 9AH battery running a 100w bulb will only give 40 minutes of continous use. A No-one I know uses a lamp continuously, some use it more than other, I use a lamp very sparingly and I always carry an LED torch on my belt for gutting, negotiating obstacles etc so the total running time doesn't mean much to most people. I used 7AH batteries with 100w lamps including the Striker and Blitz for many years before recently going over to the Deben Tracer Lithium Ion pack. You can get a new 7AH sealed gel battery for £15-20 and I have often got used ones taken out of burglar alarm systems with lots of life left in them for free to just a few quid. These days I would say, if you can possibly afford it go down the Lithium Ion route, one of these packs weighs less than a third of even a 7AH gel battery while providing more power. why mess about with relatively expensive low capacity laptop batteries etc when you can either use a cheap gel battery or fork out and get the Deben Li-ion pack? That's the good bit about Li Ion, they don't suffer that memory effect, you can run them right down and charge with no problem, or use them for 10 minutes and charge them, no problem either. As for people asking exactly how long the charge lasts if you switch the light on and leave it until it goes off, then the answer is, I don't know and won't be finding out, unless you go into your bathroom and stand and flush the toilet until the siphon breaks .................
