How to stop a dog from yapping

Recommended Posts

My colliexwhippet is about 15 months nd still yapps when chasing a rabbit any ideas how to get him to stop?

A .22 round between the ears is a pretty certain way to cure this problem. Otherwise, some yappers grow out of it and others don't. That may not be much help to you, but that is my experience.

i agree with the lost generation, never can stop a yapper, they dont grow out of it and the best thing for her is a peice of led,the reason they yap is they havent a hope of catching it so they want to frighten it to death.

Thats shite. My bitch yapped when i got her around 12 months old.

Easy slips on small easy catches is the way forward thats what sorted her.shes silent as a mouse now.

I know who id be giving the lead shot to and it wouldnt be a dog

like already said its probably because you either run it early, run it on rabbits thats impossible to catch or a combination of both, either way its probably your fault so a bullet isn't very fair is it. it may grow out of it but only if you give it easy rabbits to catch but i have yet heard of a dog being cured of this but there probably is dogs that has been cured. don't listen to people saying it will never ever be cured. i was once told that my lurcher would never take fox after jacking on them but now he takes them single handed. you will find a lot of these lurcher folk are stuck in there ways. a dog that yaps can be used for other ways of lurcher work mate so its not the be all and end all. give it time mate and see what happens and dont forget the easy bunnys.

I bought a lurcher at 18 months old , when I got him out hunting he yaps like a terrier, we kinda rescued him really and now hes got a good home. We are out every day excersing where he chases rabbits and yaps away but i dont mind cos we go ratting and thats where he earns his corn, cos although he was bitten on the tongue when a pup by a rat he struggles to get a clear kill in but he stops em escaping while the plummers come in for the kill , actually [bANNED TEXT] i think about it hes quite crap really but hes here for life.

its not always to do with been over matched too soon. i had a dog once that i didnt slip on a rabbit till it was 12 months and she sometimes yapped. she was a wippet type and offen caught 8 out of 10 rabbits so it was hardly over matched. some dogs do...some dont....nothing you can do about it sometimes.
