Too far north for me, shame as it sounds a laugh.

Do you book the land you run on specifically for you to use?

'Scuse me asking, it's just I have a friend building me a lure machine at the moment just for me and a few friends and I'm having to look for private land to rent to run on, as I've found that down here, as soon as you have any sort of gathering with dogs on public or public access land, somebody official turns up and starts muttering about public liability insurance, or else somebody unofficial turns up and wanders through the middle of it with a chihuahua on a flexilead... Even the local pet obedience clubs have been affected.

Its @ a place where anything goes.Got liability insurance just incase somebodys Yorkie gets tangled in lure and dragged along @ 40mph.Once established will ask council so mark up some lines etc like they do for local whippet racing club.Good luck with lure machine

Um, I dunno! I'll ask... a friend is building it for me.

Because I'm not sure where I'll be setting it up, yet, and what the access will be like, he was trying to make something really light and portable for me, and I know there was an issue with his first go as it burnt out the motor and he had to start again with heavier duty stuff, and then the second go needed some kind of guard for the cable, but hopefully we'll be testing it this weekend. The control I think will be "thumb on the button" stop/go type thing.

You may have guessed by now I'm not the most technical! All the racing I've done over the years (I had terriers before the lurcher) and I never really took any notice of what actually made the lure go... and my friend said he could probably make me one, how did they work... and I had to go off and find photos on the internet for him! :icon_redface:

I use scalextric controls for ours but ours is heavy but sturdy.Best starter to use is a Ford bendix motor and any solenoid. You need two red battery leads and two black and rest is easy.hardest part is having a sturdy wheel on motor and remember when controlling dont keep finger on trigger it will send lure to bout 70mph.unless ya running a cheetah haha

:D Errr.... nope, "cheetah" is not exactly the thought that pops into your mind when watching my dog run! "Was that an earthquake?!" is probably more like it. Bless him. He starts okay, if I don't mess it up for him, but then it all goes pear shaped. Hence the lure machine, for practice...

I think there was some kind of an issue with the controller on the first test that resulted in burning out the motor. Something about the lure getting airborne and turning up at the finish far, far sooner than expected. We live and learn, and the machine won't get used near a dog until we're sure it's safe.

Right I asked! Apparently we have a Ford Bendix motor.... and some other stuff:

"A starter soleniod to do the on and off .. but i have been wondering about using a dynamo as a motor and a 3 ohm potentiometer to control the speed .. not tried it yet ... also have used a Bosch 70W 12v dc motor and a torque controlled dc variable speed unit "

Friend says he's having problems keeping the line taut when stopping/starting, any hints welcome!

He's an engineer by trade... I have absolutely no idea what any of what I've just copied in means :icon_redface:

Me neither kid i was talked thru process on on phone by my dad but i learn quick. as fore line make sure its weighted well otherwise it gets all tangled etc so use full bath towel or something but when first put line on wheel just get gloves on someone and pull line tight.another tip is use a sheet or summit placed over line after your finish line because this stops the wheel from spinning and also gathers up and hides lure so dogs dont grab it and sod off pulling it.ill try get some video footage and post it for you

:clapper: Thanks for the tips!

My dog is a bit of a pain at the finish... he hits the lure hard and is forever busting muzzles doing it... the time before last we were running, somebody else started him for me and I went up to the end. They'd marked the finish line, then stopped the lure about twenty yards past it and put a bit of that heavy duty plastic tarpaulin stuff over that point - you know the stuff they make lorry sides out of? So I waited about thirty feet past that.

When himself arrived a short time later he hit the tarpaulin so hard that he - and the lure, and the tarpaulin - all slid right at me with him sat on his haunches like somebody on a coach trip. We all survived, lure included. I don't want to put him off the lure but I would prefer him to be a bit better behaved at the end and not monster the equipment, so, again, hence the practice needed!
